Calder Gardens

Philadelphia is blessed with an abundance of prestigious art museums and captivating galleries. Some are considered iconic landmarks worldwide. That’s why when we came across Calder Gardens, we set out to explore what sets this remarkable gallery apart.

Recently featured on CBS Sunday Morning, The Spot wanted to discover the history and artwork. Nestled on the historic Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Calder Gardens opened in 2025 and pays homage to three generations of Calder sculptors and artists. Alexander Calder, born in the 1800s, was best known for his innovative kinetic sculptures and monumental public works. His father famously sculpted the William Penn statue that sits atop City Hall.

Thanks to a visionary collaboration between the Calder Foundation, Neubauer Foundation, Barnes Foundation, and gardens designed by renowned landscape architect Piet Oudolf, Calder Gardens came to life. This begs the question: what is it exactly? The expansive 18,000-square-foot building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is a space where human connection, abstract ideas, and scientific theories all converge. In other words, it’s best not described but experienced.

As we moved through the space to view the exhibits, it became evident that the mark of the artist is everywhere. We were not familiar with the works of Alexander Calder before our visit. Afterward, curiosity prevailed and we began to learn the background and history of the Calder family’s influence on the city and the art world. The structural and suspended displays gave an impression of thoughtful, imaginative, and intentional design. Art and appreciation go beyond the walls and into the outdoors. Known for one of the most spectacular views of the Philadelphia skyline, art and nature morph into a sleek and contemporary aesthetic.

Philadelphia is quickly becoming a destination for traditional as well as thought-provoking abstract art. An experience like this offers added perspective and a refined definition of all concepts of reality. Whether you are an expert, student, or novice, the takeaway is to always push the limits and boundaries.
