Woman Owned Business Spotlight. Meet Megan Negron-Dalton: An Entrepreneur Who Is Challenging the Status Quo in the Audio Space

by TheSpot August 14, 2024
written by TheSpot
Entrepreneur

Welcome to the first of our series: Woman Owned Business Spotlight. At first sight, Megan Negron-Dalton appears full of youthful energy and can easily be perceived as a college student. However, it’s quite surprising to think that she is not only an audio engineer and business owner but also competes in a dynamic industry. We explore Megan’s professional background, and it turns out to be quite an impressive list of achievements. After our initial encounter with Megan, it’s clear that she is not only a successful entrepreneur but also a trailblazer in the field of innovative audio engineering, setting new benchmarks for industry norms. Her expertise spans all types of audio required for various media. While this is a wide-ranging term, Megan narrows it down to her focus on commercial mixing. This includes work on video sound, podcasting, and creating music. Megan’s team consists of both audio engineers and musicians. She mentions that podcasting is rapidly growing in the audio industry and she enjoys the process. Megan observes that podcasters are increasingly taking control of their platforms through advertising, and she and her team help in promoting their clients’ businesses. Furthermore, they handle press releases for new music releases.

As our discussion deepened, we were intrigued by Megan’s journey into the realm of audio engineering. We noted that it’s not a domain typically favored by young women. Megan shared that her musical journey began early, sparking a keen interest in the intricate aspects of audio engineering. She began her career through internships and engaged in conversations with other audio engineers to learn more about the industry. Megan and her boyfriend and partner, Michael D’Angelo, decided to venture into entrepreneurship, launching their own company. She cleverly chose the name Multi Media Audio, recognizing the shift towards a content-driven society and their readiness to tackle audio projects across various media platforms. As a woman, entrepreneur, musician, and audio engineer, we set out to discover more on how she is challenging the status quo.

Megan doesn’t focus much on the gender balance, but she recognizes that sometimes, when projects come up, she might not be selected first because people are often unfamiliar with seeing women’s skills in the audio industry firsthand. Nonetheless, Megan fully embraces her abilities, which she thinks are what ultimately earn her clients’ trust. Megan feels confident in her ability to connect with clients through her genuine care and honesty. She constantly hones her skills by reading, studying, and exploring new techniques. She’s prepared to tackle any question a client might have, ready to provide a thorough answer. She jokingly admits that occasionally, clients might be pleasantly surprised by her knowledge and expertise.

Furthermore, Megan recognizes a clear move away from the “hustle culture.” She points out that being kind plays a significant role in fostering positive interactions with her clients to reach a common goal. She also notices that the business environment is moving in the same direction, with signs indicating a decrease in pace. As a musician, Megan possesses empathy and insight into the potential obstacles clients might face, and she thinks kindness is a powerful tool in building strong connections in the workplace.

How does Megan stay driven when faced with the temptation to quit or simply not feel like it? Deep down, Megan is certain that this is her true calling. She’s deeply passionate about her career and also finds solace in her music. She plays various instruments and has been reviving old compositions she wrote years ago. Megan also appreciates the importance of balance. She knows that if she needs a break to recharge, she can step away from a project and return to it later. Her musical talent and dedication have led her to submit her song “Bruised Peach” to a contest for Rolling Stone Magazine’s America’s Next Top Hit Maker. This contest is unique because it supports Music Cares, an organization that helps millions of musicians with health and welfare support. This cause is very close to Megan’s heart as a musician. If she wins, she’ll receive the top cash prize. Megan intends to use the money to further her business and create the studio of her dreams and further expand assisting other creatives in the audio space.

Megan is living her ideal life, even without winning any competitions. She frequently attends local workshops and networking gatherings to continuously expand her knowledge and build relationships. Megan is among the numerous emerging business leaders who are breaking traditional barriers. Her journey serves as a motivation that it’s possible to remain true to yourself while putting in the effort. She’s developing her skills as a sound engineer and pursues her love for producing exquisite music. We’re eagerly awaiting more outstanding projects from Multi Media Audio. Beyond the Beach: A Unique Side to the Jersey Shore

by TheSpot June 21, 2024
written by TheSpot
Pau Hana Tiki Boat Ocean City, NJ Jersey Shore

Brian and Jennifer Toner, a married couple, epitomize the essence of weekend beach vibes as a way of life. As certified captains, the Toners have established a business that brings the island atmosphere to the Jersey Shore. Pau Hana Tiki Boat Tour has been operating for several years, offering a unique perspective of the Jersey Shore beyond its beaches.

It feels like just yesterday when my friends and I were shopping, packing our bags, and loading our cars in excitement for sun, sand, and summer adventures. Countless weekends were spent barefoot at beach bars, enjoying happy hours without a care, and strolling home in the early hours of the morning. Nowadays, it warms my heart to hear young people making plans or reminiscing about crashing on friends’ couches after a beach weekend. As adults, many of us have transitioned into parenthood or spend our time preparing for the work week instead of indulging in jello shots. However, growing older and wiser is a natural progression but it doesn’t mean that we can’t have fun anymore. It just means a little more thought and planning is required.

Pau Hana, pronounced pow-hahna, is a Hawaiian term that translates to “finished work.” With over 25 years of experience exploring beach bar concepts across the U.S. and outer islands, the Toner family has a wealth of knowledge in this area. I was curious to experience a tiki boat adventure firsthand, although my visit coincided with a rainy day devoid of sunshine. Meeting Brian at the harbor, we engaged in conversation outside on the dock while awaiting the arrival of the boat. Uncertain of what to expect, I tried to envision a fusion of a tiki bar and a boat. If we can send a man to the moon, surely we can transport a tiki bar out to sea. Lost in thought, the tiki boat finally arrived. The boats embark on a two-hour journey around Ocean City and Somers Point, returning to the dock to welcome the next group of passengers. From the appearance of the fun loving passengers boarding the boat, it was evident that this was going to be an exciting experience.

Sunset Cruise at the Jersey Shore

The couple established their business in Ocean City in 2021. In February, after a story about them was featured on 6ABC, they sold 500 tickets, indicating an early sign of success. Since then, Pau Hana has been gaining popularity for various occasions. It’s not surprising that they have a high rate of returning customers, as one patron has already booked her 12th trip. Pau Hana offers a range of bookings, including Girls Day Out or Girls Night Out, bachelor and bachelorette parties, memorials, celebrations of life, birthdays, anniversaries, and more. Pau Hana offers several tour options from early bird calm tours to mid-day lunch to sunset cruises.  If you’re a night owl and a disco party is more your speed, well there is a choice for that too. While Pau Hana is family-friendly and allows children, most of their trips are attended by adults. The couple and their son work together in this family business, making it a true family affair. During winters, the Toner family dedicates their time to travel and research for the upcoming summer.

Here’s a fun fact: many of their guests are boat owners. When inquired about it, Brian thinks that the majority of them just desire to relish their stay and have a pleasant experience. The tiki boat tour allows guests to bring their own beverages, but Pau Hana also provides cups and other necessary items. It’s a fantastic way to experience a unique side of the Jersey Shore, with sun, fun, and a floating bar. After the excursion, the party often continues at a restaurant called The Point. For a little shopping before or after your excursion, visit the Boutiki.  You’ll find apparel, gifts, memorabilia, and so much more to round out your tiki boat experience.

There’s always time to enjoy the beach, have fun with friends, and indulge in no shower happy hours. Just remember to relax, appreciate the sunset views, and let someone else handle the boating. For reservations and more information, please visit their website. https://pauhanatikiboat.com/touroptions/

Andalusia, PA: A Garden Paradise Waiting to Be Uncovered

by TheSpot June 3, 2024
written by TheSpot
The Big House Andalusia, PA

Discover a hidden garden paradise just a short 20-minute drive from Philadelphia at Andalusia Gardens in Bensalem Township. This 225-acre estate, once home to the prestigious Biddle family, offers a serene retreat reminiscent of a charming chateau in the South of France or an English cottage from a storybook village. Upon arrival, the tranquil ambiance envelops you as you stroll along the river, passing by rose bushes and grottos. Reservations are required to visit, with parking conveniently located in front of the mansion, also known as The Big House. When booking online, you have the option to explore the gardens and tour the historic home separately, both well worth the reasonable fee.

The Greek Revival architecture of The Big House holds a rich legacy tied to the Biddle family, known for their affiliation with Bailey, Banks, and Biddle, a renowned Philadelphia jewelry store. The estate’s history dates back to John Craig’s purchase in 1795 during the yellow fever outbreak, later passing down through his daughter Jane upon marrying Nicholas Biddle in 1814. The property expanded over the years, now offering a public glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Biddles, who entertained notable figures in banking, law, and politics. The well-preserved home stands as a testament to their legacy, ranking high among historic homes for its furnishings and intriguing stories.

While Philadelphia boasts a rich historical background, Andalusia’s real allure lies in its award-winning garden and arboretum. Letitia Glenn Biddle’s contributions in the late 1800s, including tulips and larkspur, transformed the garden into a botanical masterpiece. Notably, Letitia founded the first Garden Club of America, setting the stage for Andalusia to receive numerous accolades. A visit is essential to fully grasp the beauty and charm of this enchanting estate. Why not enjoy a lovely picnic amidst the picturesque surroundings? The property provides benches and chairs, offering an ideal setting for a family outing or a romantic rendezvous. Photography enthusiasts, both amateur and professional, are invited to capture the timeless beauty of Andalusia. Additionally, the estate offers a magical backdrop for weddings, creating everlasting memories in a truly exceptional setting. Escape to Andalusia Gardens for a day of wonder and beauty, without venturing far from Philadelphia’s bustling streets. You can view guidelines here: https://andalusiapa.org/guidelines/

Spread Love with Homemade Treats: A Home Baker’s Inspirational Story

by TheSpot May 15, 2024
written by TheSpot
Care Package Bakes Treats

It was a bright crisp day when I headed towards a charming Main Line neighborhood for a meeting. Upon reaching the delightful Philadelphia suburb residence, I hoped it was the correct address. Elisa Ludwig, the proprietor of Care Package Bakes, warmly invited me inside. The vibrant decor immediately caught my attention as we exchanged a few words before making our way to the kitchen. I was immediately in awe as the kitchen exuded openness, brightness, and warmth- a baker’s dream for creating memorable care packages. A sense of peace washed over me instantly. Elisa’s creations were meticulously displayed, colorful, visually appealing, and beautifully packaged. I was delighted to meet Elisa, having been impressed by her Instagram page. Elisa is a home baker specializing in crafting “care packages” filled with homemade treats.

Like many women, she transformed her passion into a thriving business. Elisa’s love for baking began in her youth, influenced by her mother who worked as a caterer and cafe owner. She gained valuable culinary knowledge and basic skills, as well as understanding the importance of presentation. Elisa attributes her ability to prioritize visual appeal in food to her early experiences. She commenced her career as a food writer for various publications in Philadelphia, where she also tested recipes and refined her culinary expertise. Elisa stresses the significance of these testing experiences in her journey.

Elisa Ludwig, Home Baker

During the pandemic, Elisa, like many other parents, had to put her own products on hold in order to prioritize her son’s schoolwork. In addition, Elisa and her husband had to give up their love for entertaining at home., as that part of their lives came to a halt. However, amidst the isolation, Elisa found moments of inspiration that led her back to her first love, baking, as a means of reconnecting with others. She believed that baking could serve as a conduit to reunite with her friends. Interestingly, Elisa humorously refers to herself as the “neighborhood baking lady.” What started as an idea quickly gained momentum. We discussed how life was before and after the pandemic, and starting her own business became a way for Elisa to establish connections with people. She takes pleasure in creating her baked goods for various individuals.

Elisa emphasizes the significance of quality in her product. She produces her goods in small quantities and dedicates time to carefully select specific and high-quality ingredients. According to her, her treats are not merely meant for mindless consumption, but rather to provide an exceptional experience. Her objective is to evoke emotions and foster the sharing of special occasions. Elisa’s range of offerings includes raspberry and chocolate chip strawberry cookies, coconut cakes with marshmallow frosting, and a seasonal assortment that is constantly changing. Elisa expresses that her business serves as her creative outlet and brings her immense satisfaction. So, where does Elisa find inspiration for her creations? She draws inspiration from her mother’s recipes and enjoys experimenting with different combinations. For Elisa, the joy lies in the process of creating and personalizing her treats.

We were given the chance to bring home our very own assortment of treats, and we can confidently say that each treat offered a delightful explosion of distinct flavors and textures. Every bite is meant to be relished, as no two treats are alike. If you’re looking to give a gift or commemorate a special person or occasion in a truly exceptional way, Care Package Bakes is the shop you should reach out to. We advise against waiting too long, as the news is spreading! They were recently honored as the Best of Philly Home Bakery in 2022 and were also featured on Fox 29 Good Philadelphia. You can watch the video showcasing their creations here. https://www.fox29.com/video/1430637. Elisa crafts treat boxes, boards, and favors that can be shipped anywhere in the U.S., or you can opt for their pick-up and delivery service. Planting the Seeds of Garden Magic: Discover the Delights of an Edible Garden with Backyard Eats

by TheSpot April 26, 2024
written by TheSpot
Backyard Eats edible garden, egg plants

Some of my favorite childhood memories are from holiday visits to my relatives just outside of Philadelphia. It seemed like everyone in the neighborhood, including my Uncle Gino, had their own vegetable garden. Gino’s pride was his tomato patch right on the front lawn. I remember him beaming as he showed us the ripe ones, which we’d pick and eat right there, often with a bit of fresh basil. Those were simple, happy times.

I’ve tried to replicate that garden magic myself, but let’s just say things didn’t work out as planned. Whether it was tomatoes or herbs, my container gardening attempts on my small balcony were always a flop. I could almost see the veggies growing in my mind, but they hardly ever did in real life. That’s why I got so excited when I stumbled upon Backyard Eats. They build and take care of gardens you can actually eat from.

I wanted to learn more about Backyard Eats, so I got in touch with Chris Mattingly, the company’s founder! He shared his journey from being laid off as a professional civil engineer to starting this unique business. After the layoff, Chris thought a lot about his past volunteer work and how much he wanted to do something meaningful. He had always helped out where he could, building community-level water systems in Honduras, or traveling to the Philippines in the wake of super typhoon Yolanda.  But Chris wanted to make a difference in his community.

Chris then told me about this one morning he spent in his tiny Chestnut Hill front-yard garden. He was fascinated by tasting berries at different ripeness levels and all the unique flavors. It was that moment of simple pleasure in his garden that led to his light bulb idea: if he loved this so much, why not help others feel the same? And just like that, he shifted his life to focus on helping people grow their own food with Backyard Eats.

Today, Backyard Eats keeps up with everything gardening-related so their clients always get the best advice and service. Chris likes to say it’s about “sharing the magic”—and it really feels like that. Whether it’s finding a new hobby, eating healthier, or spending quality time with your family and friends, there’s something special about growing your own food. Chris’s own kids have learned to love their backyard full of homegrown wonders, just like I did back at Uncle Gino’s.

Chris and his team support every garden enthusiast, regardless of their experience level, or what they’re looking to get out of your garden. They design, build, and maintain gardens. They call it ‘Full Service Food Gardening.’

The Backyard Eats magic, heavily augmented by technology on the back-end, includes printed metal plant labels for every variety planted.  The printed labels even have a unique QR code, which takes the user from their garden, right to a page with detailed care and harvest instructions, and a selection of recipes specific to the plant ingredient in question.

Tucked away in Flourtown, PA, Backyard Eats has become something really special. They offer initial consultations to get you started, assess your garden’s potential, and come up with a custom design just for you—with a 3D walk-through to boot! They’re all about getting people to enjoy gardening as much as they do, from start to finish.

Whether you’re a newbie or have been gardening for years, Backyard Eats can help you out. Just reach out to them for more info or to set up a time to talk about your green dreams. Happy gardening!

The Art of Botantical Beauty: Meet Alexa Fornicola of Botanically Blurred

by TheSpot April 8, 2024
written by TheSpot

Caring for plants or planting gardens can be a daunting experience for busy women. Admittedly, when we first discovered Alexa Fornicola, Founder of Botanically Blurred, it was the first time we encountered a “plant stylist.”  As a matter of fact, when we had Googled the term, there was no one we found other than Alexa.  We’re actually glad.  Alexa is a unique individual who has managed to create a unique place in the world.  I don’t believe there is one definition that encompasses a role, livelihood, and purpose.  Yet, Alexa has managed to combine all of those traits and found a way to help people.  In many ways, her company name fits in very well with our theme that life does not have to be shades of black and white.  Women in particular are blurring the lines of self identity and awareness.  It was refreshing to hear Alexa tell her story about forming her own identity in her life’s work and purpose.  She dives in on her inspiration and the art of botanical beauty.

Alexa is coming into her second year of Botanically Blurred and has gained more confidence than the previous year.  As we discussed imposter syndrome, Alexa brings up an interesting point.  She has made it a point not to define herself by the things she is doing but how she feels on a day to day basis.  She goes on to explain that the term successful has a different meaning to everyone.  She defines success by what she accomplishes on a daily basis. Fornicola does acknowledge that there are challenges for women in creating an identity or fitting into a space.

Alexa’s segway to plant curating and maintenance, was not a traditional route.  As a matter of fact, considering her previous career and her current career choice could be deemed a tale of clashing worlds.  At 21 years of age, she was hired for sales at a beer distributorship.  To say she had to overcome challenges in a male dominated industry is an understatement.  Alexa describes her time in sales as demanding and stressful.  Moveover, she spent a large amount of time on the road and often found herself in a challenging male dominated environment.  Although her work life was spent in her car and traveling, she often was surrounded by plants when she returned home.  Mainly acquiring  low maintenance plants or succulents, Alexa tells us that the extent of her knowledge of caring for plants consisted of being easy to take care of and not much else.  Consequently, her plants never would survive.

During covid-19, her company had shut down and Alexa’s employers redefined her position. After a certain point, the stress began to affect her physical and mental health.  She began to feel her work was not adding meaningful value to anyone’s life.  All of this led to Alexa drawing the conclusion that reaching an hierarchy in a company or the corporate world no longer drove her.  It no longer aligned with her sense of value or purpose. All the while, Alexa was coming home and tending to her plants.  Alexa’s curiosity led her to read and learn more about plant care. It was during this period where she experienced a shift in her outlook.

Alexa believes herself to be spiritual and sought alignment with her passion. She faced a difficult decision which took her well over a year to make but nevertheless decided to leave her job.   Shortly after, she began working at a plant nursery.  It was during this time, Alexa experienced a renewed feeling of  joy and invigoration.  She knew in her heart that she absolutely made the right decision.  Fornicola goes on to say that her goal is to make others feel the same sense of joy.   As for herself, the plants in her own apartment became plentiful. Her own best friend made an inadvertent compliment by telling her a plant in her apartment looked fake to her amusement. Alexa acknowledges that she is aesthetic centric and was looking for ways to add more plants while caring for her current ones. It became a natural step to take on more clients and eventually move her plants to a bigger space.

Alexa choosing the right plants

We were curious and asked the question if humans do in fact have an emotional connection to plants and nature; similar to a pet or member of the family.  Alexa emphatically affirms this notion.  She explains the scientific term, called biophilia, is defined by a desire to connect with nature.   We experience this “love” for example when walking on grass barefoot, touching a plant, smelling flowers etc.  Surprisingly, there is an actual device called The Plantwave Device that attaches to the plant and provides biofeedback into sonic data.  In essence, the plants emit electronic signals that translate into sound.  A remarkable discovery that demonstrates there’s more than meets the eye.  She goes further to explain that studies show that microbial networks are complex interconnected relationships that assist each other in ecosystems and plant health.  Alexa also admits that she has a constant need for progress.  She is constantly amazed at how nature finds a way to push forward through cracks or leaves rooting itself.  Alexa’s motto is if you keep going I’ll keep going.

Botanically Blurred now works with clients in interior plant design and maintenance. Alexa’s job is to choose the right plants to fit her clients personality and lifestyle. Additionally, she developed a mental fortitude towards her business.  Her goal is to not to compromise aesthetics but rather find solutions to have it all.  Her style is wanting her clients to “miss” the plants when they’re not there. So, what exactly is the process of how Alexa works with a client?  She assesses her clients’ needs, lifestyle, and their space.  For example, If a plant requires higher level care, Alexa will ask a lot of questions to determine what works.  Does the client have pets?  She will make sure the plants she chooses are non toxic.  Alexa allows the client to determine how involved they want to be.  They will either turn over the decision entirely over to Alexa or the client is welcome to add as much input as they would like.  Understanding the client is key.  Alexa even gets down to the granular level by asking questions relating to thermostat settings (which helps her assess how much watering a plant will need).

Plant interior design

Her advice in looking for inspiration or getting started in designing your space with plants?  One way is to walk around a home and garden outlet, choose a plant that speaks to you, find out the name and research all the details.  Her tip:  start small.  Do not overcomplicate.  Fornicola feels it’s important to self reflect about how involved you want to be in the actual care and go from there.  Of course, you can always have a professional outlet like Botanically Blurred who will guide you in the right direction to a better living environment.  Botanically Blurred  services New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  For information on her services or to book an appointment, learn more here https://www.botanicallyblurred.com/

PETAL POWER: THE PHILADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW

by TheSpot March 6, 2024
written by TheSpot

If we are to close our eyes for a moment and think a good thought, to de-stress, or to visualize, chances are we think of a place of unparalleled beauty.  We then may think of our loved ones or a special person of whom we would like to share that beauty.  What would that beautiful place look like?  Maybe it’s a field, lake, or even an ocean surrounded by flowers. A dreamlike oasis where art meets the natural world.  The Philadelphia Flower Show can is one of the most anticipated events of the year where art meets nature.  Held annually in Philadelphia, it is considered the world’s oldest indoor flower show, drawing over 250,000 visitors.  The economic and social impact to the region is boundless.

Seth Pearsoll has gardening and landscaping in his blood.  Growing up in the midwest, Pearsoll was always working the land as a hobby and a chore. Curiously, he was studying linguistics and getting ready for finals when an article on landscape design caught his eye.  After making some decisions, Pearsoll headed to Massachusetts to pursue his degree at The Conway School of Landscape Design.  After some years, Seth found himself in Philadelphia and now has the enviable role of Creative Director and Vice President of the Philadelphia Flower Show.

The Flower Show has been growing exponentially with each passing year.  Forbes calls it “a truly beloved event that has been a staple in the cultural fabric of Philadelphia for 195 years.”  Each year, a theme is selected by a multitude of factors.  We were curious on how a theme is decided upon.  Seth brought up the interesting concept of a before and after covid.  Prior to covid, themes were based on escapism which Seth stresses the positive aspects. After covid, the conversation shifted generating ideas and partnerships with substance.  Partners and spectators were in search of  themes that are timely, applicable, and relevant.  He emphasizes the importance of maintaining a light touch and engagement.  Pearsoll illustrates that during covid, themes centered around mental health and wellness.  Following the two years during the covid, they decided upon a bold and passionate theme: Garden Electric in 2023.  The concept originated from the notion that flowers in their essence ignite sparks within the soul.

Pearsoll explained that this year’s theme, United by Flowers, emanated from a sense of hunger for common ground and shared passions for gardening.  The idea was to build a show around sharing and intersecting passions.  We asked if there’s an ever-growing interest in learning more about nature & gardening in general, and Seth’s answer is ‘yes’. He has two sides to the story. ‘There’s always been an interest in gardening & landscaping in the older generations, but younger generations are moving towards learning & education for themselves rather than out of necessity’ he says. Seth is of the opinion that there is a new generation that is embracing and personalizing gardening and landscaping.

So how does the Philadelphia Flower Show continue to inspire and what can we expect this year?  Community is apparent throughout the exhibition. From the dining rooms to the beauty salons and a huge map of the United States, there is something for everyone. On Artisan Row, visitors can create their own unique and personal floral crowns, construct their own bouquets, and design their own floral handbags. Early Morning Tours are available for purchase for a special tour and a deeper dive into horticulture..  Butterfly Live is a unique experience to see first hand beautiful butterflies resting and gently engaging with visitors in a netted tent.

The Philadelphia Flower Show has been captivating audiences for almost 200 years.  This one of a kind experience is where we can connect with the outside world, learn more about species and plant life, and ultimately inspire us to create and recognize our own natural habitats and place in the world.  It is our opportunity to learn and appreciate a truly unique event. CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN PHILADELPHIA: A CITY OF FIRSTS

by TheSpot February 25, 2024
written by TheSpot

Philadelphia is a city of firsts.  The first hospital, the first lending library, the first African Methodist Episcopal Church, the first art museum, the first women’s medical college and if you can believe it, much more.  As we celebrate Black History Month, we journey into discovery, history, and impact of many of our celebrated figures.  As we continue learning  stories through art, writings, and music, we discover the lasting impact of diverse cultures throughout our city and beyond.

Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E) Church is one of the more significant and noted congregations in the country.  The existence of the church leads to its founder, Richard Allen.  Allen was formerly enslaved by a Philadelphia attorney, and eventually sold to a farmer in Delaware.  Richard was influenced by traveling Methodists to preach the word and at the age of 20, bought his freedom.  For several years, Allen supported himself with labor jobs.  After purchasing a parcel of land on 6th and Lombard Streets, the ground was dedicated on July 29th, 1794.  It is the oldest African Methodist Episcopal congregation in the nation. The church’s archives are a treasure trove of historical documents, books, and visitor logs. Mother Bethel A.M.E Church still stands and remains active today.  Richard and his wife Sarah are buried on site.

MARIAN ANDERSON

Marian Anderson, born in Philadelphia in 1897, rose to the greatest heights in the opera world because of her gifted voice.  In 1925, she entered a contest along with 300 other contestants.  She won first prize and performed with the New York City Philharmonic Orchestra. She went on to highly successful tours throughout Europe during the 1930s.  She performed in front of world leaders, kings, queens, and diplomats.  Despite her great success, some doors were closed to Marian due to her race.  In one instance, she attempted to rent a concert facility in Washington, D.C however was denied.  Drawing widespread protest including Eleanor Roosevelt, Marian ultimately performed at Lincoln Memorial in January 1955.  She drew over 75,000 people and was given a standing ovation.  In the coming years, Ms. Anderson was a recipient of numerous awards, medals, and honorary degrees.  A few include the Presidential of Freedom and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards.  Today, the home purchased by Marian in 1924 at 762 South Martin Street, was deemed a historical landmark.  The home operates as The Marian Anderson Residence Museum.

The Sound of Philadelphia was not only a musical era but a movement.  Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, have solidified their place in music history as songwriters and producers.  Furthermore, their black owned label, Philadelphia International Records spurned hit after hit throughout the 1970s and beyond.  Artists such as the O’Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, and Patti LaBelle reverberated from Broad Street to around the world.  Songs like “Message in our Music” and “Wake Up Everybody” embodied musical expressions of community and activism with danceable beats.  In addition to a thriving music scene, Gamble and Huff thrived as successful businessmen not only owning the label, but owning the publishing rights and masters.

Today, TSOP or Philly Soul, has influenced recording acts around the world.  Current performers such as Justin Timberlake and Boyz II Men have directly cited the Philly Sound as being a major influence to their music.  The actual recording studio no longer exists however all one has to do is walk along the Philadelphia Music Alliance Walk of Fame along Broad and Walnut Streets to view our treasured artists and their impact.

Lawnside, NJ has the denomination of becoming the first independent self-governing African American municipality in the northern U.S.  Peter Mott was a minister and self made man who offered their home as a stop for the Underground Railroad. As a prosperous property owner, his land oftentimes provided a safe haven to enslaved escapees.  Today, his home stands as a museum.  Historical documents show the importance of the site and town as many in the community worked together as freedom fighters or to do their part in assisting those to freedom.

To really experience the rich tapestry of our culture here in the Greater Philadelphia region, visiting and walking tours really put us in the space of time of our African American brothers and sisters. It is the buildings, art, and music that tell stories that we are not always able to see or hear at face value.  We continue to journey to discovery with rich and authentic narratives.

The Delightful Experience of Afternoon Tea: A Perfect Blend of Elegance and Indulgence

by TheSpot February 13, 2024
written by TheSpot

Love is an expression that manifests in a variety of ways.  There is romantic, familial, for friends or for any living being in our lives. There is self-care or self-love.  Whether we are healing or simply nurturing ourselves, loving ourselves is showing up for our best selves.

As Valentine’s Day and the equally popular Galentine’s Day are upon us, however way we choose to celebrate love, is really a matter of personal choice.  Cookie cutter ideas are becoming a thing of the past and we’re here for it.   Chocolate remains the ultimate symbol of the love month and we wouldn’t have it any other way.  As restaurants offer specialized menus and limited promotions, we found there are other delightful experiences that you can enjoy with your favorite people.

Firstly, how often when making plans for a group, does the idea of a convenient bar serving up cocktails and perhaps a few bites springs to mind?  While coordinating schedules, the feeling becomes more or less like a job and the end result is something thrown together which takes the fun out.  There is always a time for a meet up but maybe there are some easier ideas that can give you back quality time.

Tea rooms or cafes devoted to tea time have gained popularity recently.   Perhaps a return to old-world traditions and elegance has bookings in high demand.  Either way, the ambience of a place setting, linens, tea cups, and finger sandwiches exudes an air of refinement.  A tea house allows these moments of leisure by sipping on a cup of tea, savor small delicacies, and engage in the art of conversation.  It allows us to fully immerse ourselves in the present moment and cherish it.

Why have a tea party gathering?  In addition to valuing precious time, it allows your loved ones to sample diverse tastes and traditions from around the world.   A Tase of Britain in Wayne, Pa, offers not only teas from across the pond, but also hard to find snacks and candy bars that can only be found in the U.K.  If you don’t want the experience to end there, an adorable gift shop offers many unique items that make great gifts or simply to take home a few mementos.  La Mademoiselle Macaron in Mullica Hill, NJ, offers a French experience with tea, fresh macarons, tarts, and pastries.  Select events and workshops are also available on their website.  For an elevated afternoon tea experience, The Mary Cassatt Tea Room in The Rittenhouse, is an old-world affair.  A Philadelphia tradition that will take you on a journey back in time.

Schedules, appointments, sports activities won’t let up anytime soon.  We can however set aside an afternoon to relish in a world where time slows down, enjoy our company, and appreciate the exquisiteness of life.

LOCAL PHILLY ACTOR DISHES ON SPORTS, FOOD, AND THE EXCITING NEW SERIES JOEY’S PLACE

by TheSpot December 13, 2023
written by TheSpot

Upon meeting local actor Frank Volpe, one immediately feels at ease.   This is due to the fact that he hails from Northeast Philadelphia and currently resides in Bucks County, PA.  During our conversation, a large Sixers poster loomed in the background solidifying his status as a Philly sports fan.   Within minutes, it became evident that Frank possessed the qualities of a friendly neighbor who takes the time to greet you and inquire about your well-being.  Frank is set to portray the lead character Joey in the highly anticipated television project, Joey’s Place.    Our discussion covered topics ranging from sports to favorite restaurants, all the while exploring why Joey’s Place is poised to become the next big sensation.

The tv series centers around a local bar/restaurant owner who dabbles in organized crime while grappling with his conscience in a tug of war between good and evil.  The voice of reason comes in the form of 12 year old actor, Hudson Chance, who plays Joey’s younger self.  “Pressure Cooker” is the pilot episode and full of dysfunctional high jinks.  Joey is smack dab in the middle of planning a heist at the restaurant when his wife makes an appearance with in-laws in tow.

The role of Joey is multi-faceted which offers an exciting opportunity for Frank to explore various characteristics.  Volpe’s skill sets include stunt work and martial arts, particularly Muay Thai.  We asked if he is able to apply those skills on set.   If a role calls for physical activity, Frank is all in.   So how did Frank connect with creators, Terry McFadden and Steve Sacavitch, and ultimately land the lead role?  According to Frank, he came across a casting call which immediately piqued his interest.  Being from Philly, Frank knew right from the start that he wanted to be a part of the series.   We asked him what made this role so appealing. and his response was that he’s looking forward to interacting with vibrant characters and filming in South Philly.  His impression is that Joey’s Place is in essence a love letter to the neighborhood.

What can audiences look forward to?  Volpe is eager to show Joey is a good guy at heart.  He acknowledges that Joey may not always make wise decisions but aspires to portray the layers of attributes to his character’s shadow self.   And what does Frank think of working with young actor Hudson Chance?  He tells us that working with kids can be fun and looks forward to learning a thing or two.

Frank is well on his way to building up his portfolio which leads us to the question of who are his biggest role models in pursuing acting full time?  If the words DeNiro and Pacino are on the tip of your tongue, you may want to think again.  Surprisingly, Frank cites his parents.  In his words, his mother was a strong advocate for doing “what makes you happy” as long as he was putting in the work and time.  It’s also easy to see the admiration for his father, who emigrated from Italy, and was able to start his own successful tile business.

Finally, as a Philadelphia native, we were curious about what makes Philly a magical place from his perspective.   Frank drew a parallel between the atmosphere of the city during the 2017-2018 Eagles season.  He noted the sense of camaraderie and connection among sports fans and general population especially during the Super Bowl.  There is an indescribable bond that exists which cannot be replicated elsewhere.  Furthermore, we inquired about Frank’s favorite spot to unwind.  He revealed that he indeed has two favorite Italian restaurants in the city.  Although he hesitates to disclose them fearing partiality, we can assure you that both establishments are authentic and thriving.    Additionally, you can find Frank rooting for …you guessed it…his favorite home town team, the Philadelphia Eagles.  Frank Volpe all in all, shares his love of acting all the while reveling in the colorful world of Joey’s Place and for that matter Philly.
