Spread Love with Homemade Treats: A Home Baker’s Inspirational Story

by TheSpot May 15, 2024

Care Package Bakes Treats

It was a bright crisp day when I headed towards a charming Main Line neighborhood for a meeting. Upon reaching the delightful Philadelphia suburb residence, I hoped it was the correct address. Elisa Ludwig, the proprietor of Care Package Bakes, warmly invited me inside. The vibrant decor immediately caught my attention as we exchanged a few words before making our way to the kitchen. I was immediately in awe as the kitchen exuded openness, brightness, and warmth- a baker’s dream for creating memorable care packages. A sense of peace washed over me instantly. Elisa’s creations were meticulously displayed, colorful, visually appealing, and beautifully packaged. I was delighted to meet Elisa, having been impressed by her Instagram page. Elisa is a home baker specializing in crafting “care packages” filled with homemade treats.

Like many women, she transformed her passion into a thriving business. Elisa’s love for baking began in her youth, influenced by her mother who worked as a caterer and cafe owner. She gained valuable culinary knowledge and basic skills, as well as understanding the importance of presentation. Elisa attributes her ability to prioritize visual appeal in food to her early experiences. She commenced her career as a food writer for various publications in Philadelphia, where she also tested recipes and refined her culinary expertise. Elisa stresses the significance of these testing experiences in her journey.

Elisa Ludwig, Home Baker

During the pandemic, Elisa, like many other parents, had to put her own products on hold in order to prioritize her son’s schoolwork. In addition, Elisa and her husband had to give up their love for entertaining at home., as that part of their lives came to a halt. However, amidst the isolation, Elisa found moments of inspiration that led her back to her first love, baking, as a means of reconnecting with others. She believed that baking could serve as a conduit to reunite with her friends. Interestingly, Elisa humorously refers to herself as the “neighborhood baking lady.” What started as an idea quickly gained momentum. We discussed how life was before and after the pandemic, and starting her own business became a way for Elisa to establish connections with people. She takes pleasure in creating her baked goods for various individuals.

Elisa emphasizes the significance of quality in her product. She produces her goods in small quantities and dedicates time to carefully select specific and high-quality ingredients. According to her, her treats are not merely meant for mindless consumption, but rather to provide an exceptional experience. Her objective is to evoke emotions and foster the sharing of special occasions. Elisa’s range of offerings includes raspberry and chocolate chip strawberry cookies, coconut cakes with marshmallow frosting, and a seasonal assortment that is constantly changing. Elisa expresses that her business serves as her creative outlet and brings her immense satisfaction. So, where does Elisa find inspiration for her creations? She draws inspiration from her mother’s recipes and enjoys experimenting with different combinations. For Elisa, the joy lies in the process of creating and personalizing her treats.

We were given the chance to bring home our very own assortment of treats, and we can confidently say that each treat offered a delightful explosion of distinct flavors and textures. Every bite is meant to be relished, as no two treats are alike. If you’re looking to give a gift or commemorate a special person or occasion in a truly exceptional way, Care Package Bakes is the shop you should reach out to. We advise against waiting too long, as the news is spreading! They were recently honored as the Best of Philly Home Bakery in 2022 and were also featured on Fox 29 Good Philadelphia. You can watch the video showcasing their creations here. https://www.fox29.com/video/1430637. Elisa crafts treat boxes, boards, and favors that can be shipped anywhere in the U.S., or you can opt for their pick-up and delivery service. Experience the Small Town Charm of Lititz, PA

by TheSpot April 17, 2024
written by TheSpot
Lititz, PA 1700s architecture

As a lifelong Philly resident, there are certain towns that I had simply never heard of.  Admittedly, there probably wouldn’t be much of an incentive to explore my surroundings beyond my familiar scope.  That’s why when a friend mentioned Lititz, PA, it wasn’t a destination on my radar.  The discussion sprang from the proximity to Hershey, PA and my friend suggested it was a town worth checking out.  Aside from the name not being particularly easy to remember, I backlogged it for quite some time.  Until that is, we decided to do a little road trip to the Fire and Ice Festival being held in the center of town.  It was a good reason to get out of my comfort zone.

Lititz, part of Lancaster County, is charming and mythical.  Before we headed down the turnpike, we made a short list of spots to visit.  Fortunately, many of the dining and boutique shops can be found right on Main street.  We plugged in the GPS and we were on our way.  We made good timing with just a little over an hour ride and luckily found parking in front of the Lititz Springs Inn and Bulls Head Public House.  A pub with an inn attached, our first order of business was to sit down for refreshing pint craft beers and lunch of hearty pub fare.  As it turns out, it happened to be voted one of the best beer bars in America by USA Today and Best Beer Bar in Pennsylvania by the Great American Beer Competition.

After a leisurely lunch, we noticed instantly that Main Street was bustling with activities and families enjoying a Sunday afternoon.  Strollers, families, and even young friend groups seemed to walk along window shopping.  Many in the crowd sporting Philadelphia Eagles apparel.  Several antique shops caught our eye.  One was more charming than the next.  Lancaster, well known for high quality furniture and decor, we stopped in to see what treasures we could find.  Cast iron stoves, woven carpets, and antique irons were just a few items that can be found at fairly reasonable prices.  You can spend an entire day alone just antiquing in Lancaster County of which I had made a mental note.  As we walked along a little further, a shop with a large pretzel display featured prominently.  If you didn’t know anything else, you knew you had to sample a fresh warm pretzel from Lancaster County.  I had discovered after my visit that the  Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery had a pretty interesting history.

Founded in 1861 by Julius Sturgis, it is considered the oldest pretzel bakery in America.  Moveover, it is the oldest family operated pretzel  bakery in America.  Judging by the line just to sample these delicious warm pretzels was a testament to their legacy.  If you love a good old fashioned warm pretzel from harking back to the days of the “pretzel guy” from childhood,  you haven’t experienced a pretzel until you have a Sturgis pretzel.  We took a few minutes to indulge in its’ warm, buttery, and light texture.  Just to sample a Sturgis pretzel was worth the ride alone.  The store held a variety of pretzel snacks including chocolate covered pretzels with their other famed confection of Lancaster, Wilbur Chocolate. A match made in heaven.

Wilbur Chocolate Retail Store happened to be closed on the day of our visit but you couldn’t go too far without Wilbur Chocolates featured in many of the boutiques and shops.  Its claim to fame is the Wilbur bud, a chocolate process where chocolate resembles the bud of a flower.  The factory, founded in 1864,  boasts the original recipe and continues to be a beloved tradition of Lititz as well as manufactured in Central Pennsylvania.  Wilbur Chocolate had one famous celebrity brand that drew much attention to Wilbur Chocolates and Lititz, PA.  Muhammed Ali, made a visit to the chocolate plant in 1978 to promote the candy branded in his namesake, “The Muhammad Ali Crisp Crunch Candy Bar.”  It is said that he drew over a thousand people to the town.  Today you can also pay a visit to the Wilbur Lititz Hotel, now a Hilton Hotel.  It was originally converted from the original chocolate factory and the Wilbur Chocolate Museum stands next door.

While you’re walking around town, feel free to slow down and observe your surroundings.  Many of the buildings have original structures and exteriors from the 1700s.  The town is representative of its history and influence of Native Americans and Europeans of that era.  There are currently 57 listings of the National Register of Historic Places in Lancaster County.   Another fun fact:  the oldest girls boarding school can also be found in Lititz, PA.  Linden Hall for Girls was founded in 1746 and has been in continuous operation here  in the United States.  The Moravian Church Square is another historical example founded in 1749.  According to the Church’s website, the Lititz Moravian Congregation began in 1749 and the church was built on a 491 acre farm in 1787.  The grounds offer a stunning view and within a walkable distance from shops and restaurants. Whether you’re planning a family day trip, a shopping excursion, or simply explore Lancaster County, Lititz has much to offer.

I had to stretch beyond my comfort zone but I was glad to discover a quaint new town off the beaten track.  Lititz has all the old and new world charm to spend a perfect recreational weekend with friends and family.  It’s a short drive away whether by car or horse buggy but nevertheless, you’ll be glad you did.

The Art of Botantical Beauty: Meet Alexa Fornicola of Botanically Blurred

by TheSpot April 8, 2024
written by TheSpot

Caring for plants or planting gardens can be a daunting experience for busy women. Admittedly, when we first discovered Alexa Fornicola, Founder of Botanically Blurred, it was the first time we encountered a “plant stylist.”  As a matter of fact, when we had Googled the term, there was no one we found other than Alexa.  We’re actually glad.  Alexa is a unique individual who has managed to create a unique place in the world.  I don’t believe there is one definition that encompasses a role, livelihood, and purpose.  Yet, Alexa has managed to combine all of those traits and found a way to help people.  In many ways, her company name fits in very well with our theme that life does not have to be shades of black and white.  Women in particular are blurring the lines of self identity and awareness.  It was refreshing to hear Alexa tell her story about forming her own identity in her life’s work and purpose.  She dives in on her inspiration and the art of botanical beauty.

Alexa is coming into her second year of Botanically Blurred and has gained more confidence than the previous year.  As we discussed imposter syndrome, Alexa brings up an interesting point.  She has made it a point not to define herself by the things she is doing but how she feels on a day to day basis.  She goes on to explain that the term successful has a different meaning to everyone.  She defines success by what she accomplishes on a daily basis. Fornicola does acknowledge that there are challenges for women in creating an identity or fitting into a space.

Alexa’s segway to plant curating and maintenance, was not a traditional route.  As a matter of fact, considering her previous career and her current career choice could be deemed a tale of clashing worlds.  At 21 years of age, she was hired for sales at a beer distributorship.  To say she had to overcome challenges in a male dominated industry is an understatement.  Alexa describes her time in sales as demanding and stressful.  Moveover, she spent a large amount of time on the road and often found herself in a challenging male dominated environment.  Although her work life was spent in her car and traveling, she often was surrounded by plants when she returned home.  Mainly acquiring  low maintenance plants or succulents, Alexa tells us that the extent of her knowledge of caring for plants consisted of being easy to take care of and not much else.  Consequently, her plants never would survive.

During covid-19, her company had shut down and Alexa’s employers redefined her position. After a certain point, the stress began to affect her physical and mental health.  She began to feel her work was not adding meaningful value to anyone’s life.  All of this led to Alexa drawing the conclusion that reaching an hierarchy in a company or the corporate world no longer drove her.  It no longer aligned with her sense of value or purpose. All the while, Alexa was coming home and tending to her plants.  Alexa’s curiosity led her to read and learn more about plant care. It was during this period where she experienced a shift in her outlook.

Alexa believes herself to be spiritual and sought alignment with her passion. She faced a difficult decision which took her well over a year to make but nevertheless decided to leave her job.   Shortly after, she began working at a plant nursery.  It was during this time, Alexa experienced a renewed feeling of  joy and invigoration.  She knew in her heart that she absolutely made the right decision.  Fornicola goes on to say that her goal is to make others feel the same sense of joy.   As for herself, the plants in her own apartment became plentiful. Her own best friend made an inadvertent compliment by telling her a plant in her apartment looked fake to her amusement. Alexa acknowledges that she is aesthetic centric and was looking for ways to add more plants while caring for her current ones. It became a natural step to take on more clients and eventually move her plants to a bigger space.

Alexa choosing the right plants

We were curious and asked the question if humans do in fact have an emotional connection to plants and nature; similar to a pet or member of the family.  Alexa emphatically affirms this notion.  She explains the scientific term, called biophilia, is defined by a desire to connect with nature.   We experience this “love” for example when walking on grass barefoot, touching a plant, smelling flowers etc.  Surprisingly, there is an actual device called The Plantwave Device that attaches to the plant and provides biofeedback into sonic data.  In essence, the plants emit electronic signals that translate into sound.  A remarkable discovery that demonstrates there’s more than meets the eye.  She goes further to explain that studies show that microbial networks are complex interconnected relationships that assist each other in ecosystems and plant health.  Alexa also admits that she has a constant need for progress.  She is constantly amazed at how nature finds a way to push forward through cracks or leaves rooting itself.  Alexa’s motto is if you keep going I’ll keep going.

Botanically Blurred now works with clients in interior plant design and maintenance. Alexa’s job is to choose the right plants to fit her clients personality and lifestyle. Additionally, she developed a mental fortitude towards her business.  Her goal is to not to compromise aesthetics but rather find solutions to have it all.  Her style is wanting her clients to “miss” the plants when they’re not there. So, what exactly is the process of how Alexa works with a client?  She assesses her clients’ needs, lifestyle, and their space.  For example, If a plant requires higher level care, Alexa will ask a lot of questions to determine what works.  Does the client have pets?  She will make sure the plants she chooses are non toxic.  Alexa allows the client to determine how involved they want to be.  They will either turn over the decision entirely over to Alexa or the client is welcome to add as much input as they would like.  Understanding the client is key.  Alexa even gets down to the granular level by asking questions relating to thermostat settings (which helps her assess how much watering a plant will need).

Plant interior design

Her advice in looking for inspiration or getting started in designing your space with plants?  One way is to walk around a home and garden outlet, choose a plant that speaks to you, find out the name and research all the details.  Her tip:  start small.  Do not overcomplicate.  Fornicola feels it’s important to self reflect about how involved you want to be in the actual care and go from there.  Of course, you can always have a professional outlet like Botanically Blurred who will guide you in the right direction to a better living environment.  Botanically Blurred  services New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  For information on her services or to book an appointment, learn more here https://www.botanicallyblurred.com/

UNVEILING THE BLUE MEANIE:  BRIAN HEFFRON’S INCREDIBLE RISE FROM SOUTH PHILLY TO THE WORLD OF THE WWE

by TheSpot April 3, 2024
written by TheSpot

You just may see Brian Heffron, a.k.a The Blue Meanie, at his local favorite bar McCusker’s Tavern.  Brian and his girlfriend Tracy are often together either taking in a game or chatting with other patrons.  Unimposing, Brian is soft spoken and pleasant.  McCusker’s, located in the St. Monica Parish section of South Philly, has been a long time favorite spot in the neighborhood.  It is the type of place that exudes comfort and home.  It’s only natural that Brian does not veer from his favorite place.  In many ways, his rise all started in St. Monica Parish and South Philly, where he was born.

Although he was born in Philly, at the age of two, Heffron’s family wound up moving to New Jersey.  Brian spent his childhood primarily in Gloucester City and Atlantic City.  He states today that even at a young age he felt a connection to South Philly knowing that’s where he was born.

Most artists that have a love of music, team, or movie and can name the exact moment of their calling.  That moment came in the form of Brian’s eight year old self when his friend next door wanted to watch wrestling instead of the Phillies.  Brian tells us he was enthralled especially by the larger than life aspect.  However, there was one match that Heffron attributes to getting “bitten by the bug.” That match was between Rick Martel and Tony Garea against Mr. Fuji and Mr. Saito.  He credits that match as the one that really stayed with him.

If Brian was entertaining any thoughts of one day becoming a wrestler himself, he had some serious health challenges to overcome.  Heffron had severe asthma growing up and often was in the hospital during spring and fall seasons. Brian recounts that he was hooked up to breathing machines for a couple of weeks at a time therefore consigned his love of wrestling as a spectator.  In hindsight, it is easy to see now how his journey led to wrestling.  As he explained, he often felt he didn’t quite fit in.  He was not able to participate in everyday outside activities therefore spent a large amount of time in his room.

During the early 1980s, his grandfather took him to wrestling matches at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.  The Boardwalk Hall was a popular venue for wrestling and especially the main events.  Brian vividly recalls the first match he attended.  The match consisted of  Mr. Fuji and Mr. Saito, Black Jack Mulligan against the Strongbow brothers and Andre the Giant.  Brian brings up the memory with a smile on his face but on a more personal note, the main event holds a special place in his heart as he notes it was a pivotal moment in his life.  Andre the Giant came to be his all time favorite wrestler.  Brian acknowledges that he really identified with Andre the Giant in terms of feeling different from the other kids.  Also, Heffron was often picked on for being asthmatic, living in a single parent household, and gaining weight as a child.

Depression also played a role due to his ongoing health issues.  Eventually Heffron was fortunate that his parents found a specialist who was able to properly diagnose Brian’s asthma.  Finding his asthma was triggered due to multiple allergies, they were able to find a treatment that has helped Heffron tremendously.  Eventually, Brian’s lungs became stronger and was able to participate in activities that he wasn’t able to in his high school years.  As a result, Brian tells us he was able to experience a new lease on life.

Heffron’s pro wrestling career began in Lima, Ohio shortly after high school.  About a year or so on the circuit,  Stevie Richards and Raven of ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) began to take note of the young Heffron.  As he recalls the story, Raven took Brian to his house in Cherry Hill, NJ  and presented the idea of taking on the character The Blue Meanie based on the Blue Meanies in the movie Yellow Submarine.  At that point in time, Brian was only concerned with joining the ECW.  Raven convinced Brian to dye his hair blue and his alter ego was born.  It was a full circle moment, as Brian tells us he often attended ECW shows as a fan.  Brian credits the ECW on what he describes as the Haley’s Comet of wrestling.  The ECW brought a toughness to the sport which he describes as wrestling’s “Broad Street Bullies.”   His outlook is that the ECW changed professional wrestling forever.  Brian names Todd Gordon as being the one responsible for many careers of pro wrestlers we are familiar with today.

After three years with ECW, it was a phone call in 1998 that would really change Brian’s career and the trajectory of his life.   Brian recalled that  had worked with Norm Connors in Pittsburgh.  After that show,  Brian returned to Philly and was told to expect a call from Bruce Prichard, Executive Director of WWE.  After speaking to Prichard, Brian who was then living with his grandmother and mother on 13th and Shunk Streets, advised his family to put all the bills under Brian’s name.  Needless to say, that was the moment he knew he had hit it big.  With a touch of emotion, Brian recalls that he was able to provide a comfortable life for his grandmother for the next couple of years of her life.  He expressed gratitude that he was able to give back to his family for all of the sacrifices they had made for him.   The feeling was a huge moment for himself, his family, and his hometown.

We wanted to know directly from The Blue Meanie, what is the significance of Wrestlemania 40 in Philadelphia?  What is the enormity of this event?  Brian does not give a watered down explanation.  He simply states that it’s long overdue.  Brian cites the early days of how Philadelphia was a huge market for wrestling and that matches were televised in the city.  He emphasizes that Philly was always a pro wrestling town. As a matter of fact, Vince McMahon would come to the Spectrum to get a first hand look of the product. To paint a picture, Brian describes Wrestlemania as the Super Bowl of wrestling.   After all, this is the ultimate goal of any professional wrestler .  Any city that hosts Wrestlemania benefits economically as well as other promotions and companies.  The Hall of Fame, Friday Night Smackdown, and Monday Night Raw will be huge draws.  People are hailing from all over the world to attend all of these events.  In addition, Wrestlemania is huge culturally for the city so it only makes sense that Wrestlemania returns “home.”  Heffron himself will be hosting his own Wrestlemania event, Meanie Mania.  If you’re expecting some large venue in downtown Philly, think again.  Heffron will be in his favorite place, McCusker’s Tavern.

Naturally we wanted to know the importance of female wrestlers and interest in the sport overall.  Brian affirms that this is the best time for women in wrestling.  His take is that it was always perceived to be a male dominated profession however the last decade is changing that perception. All female events, pay per views, and big names are drawing in big numbers .  Brian recognizes that female wrestlers have always been great for the sport and entertaining.  He goes as far as saying, the growth of females in the WWE is nothing less than a revolution.  Heffron names women like Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair as big time draws and Rhea Ripley is one of the biggest names regardless of gender.

With Meanie’s rise from humble beginnings to the WWE, how does the  future look for The Blue Meanie?  He continues to give back and wishes to entertain further with his podcast Mind of the Meanie and lately appearing in various documentaries.  His goal is to bring smiles and laughter to his audience and fans of the sport.  According to The Blue Meanie, as long as that’s the case, he’s done his job. You can find the Mind of the Meanie podcast where ever you get your podcasts.

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN PHILADELPHIA: A CITY OF FIRSTS

by TheSpot February 25, 2024
written by TheSpot

Philadelphia is a city of firsts.  The first hospital, the first lending library, the first African Methodist Episcopal Church, the first art museum, the first women’s medical college and if you can believe it, much more.  As we celebrate Black History Month, we journey into discovery, history, and impact of many of our celebrated figures.  As we continue learning  stories through art, writings, and music, we discover the lasting impact of diverse cultures throughout our city and beyond.

Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E) Church is one of the more significant and noted congregations in the country.  The existence of the church leads to its founder, Richard Allen.  Allen was formerly enslaved by a Philadelphia attorney, and eventually sold to a farmer in Delaware.  Richard was influenced by traveling Methodists to preach the word and at the age of 20, bought his freedom.  For several years, Allen supported himself with labor jobs.  After purchasing a parcel of land on 6th and Lombard Streets, the ground was dedicated on July 29th, 1794.  It is the oldest African Methodist Episcopal congregation in the nation. The church’s archives are a treasure trove of historical documents, books, and visitor logs. Mother Bethel A.M.E Church still stands and remains active today.  Richard and his wife Sarah are buried on site.

MARIAN ANDERSON

Marian Anderson, born in Philadelphia in 1897, rose to the greatest heights in the opera world because of her gifted voice.  In 1925, she entered a contest along with 300 other contestants.  She won first prize and performed with the New York City Philharmonic Orchestra. She went on to highly successful tours throughout Europe during the 1930s.  She performed in front of world leaders, kings, queens, and diplomats.  Despite her great success, some doors were closed to Marian due to her race.  In one instance, she attempted to rent a concert facility in Washington, D.C however was denied.  Drawing widespread protest including Eleanor Roosevelt, Marian ultimately performed at Lincoln Memorial in January 1955.  She drew over 75,000 people and was given a standing ovation.  In the coming years, Ms. Anderson was a recipient of numerous awards, medals, and honorary degrees.  A few include the Presidential of Freedom and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards.  Today, the home purchased by Marian in 1924 at 762 South Martin Street, was deemed a historical landmark.  The home operates as The Marian Anderson Residence Museum.

The Sound of Philadelphia was not only a musical era but a movement.  Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, have solidified their place in music history as songwriters and producers.  Furthermore, their black owned label, Philadelphia International Records spurned hit after hit throughout the 1970s and beyond.  Artists such as the O’Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, and Patti LaBelle reverberated from Broad Street to around the world.  Songs like “Message in our Music” and “Wake Up Everybody” embodied musical expressions of community and activism with danceable beats.  In addition to a thriving music scene, Gamble and Huff thrived as successful businessmen not only owning the label, but owning the publishing rights and masters.

Today, TSOP or Philly Soul, has influenced recording acts around the world.  Current performers such as Justin Timberlake and Boyz II Men have directly cited the Philly Sound as being a major influence to their music.  The actual recording studio no longer exists however all one has to do is walk along the Philadelphia Music Alliance Walk of Fame along Broad and Walnut Streets to view our treasured artists and their impact.

Lawnside, NJ has the denomination of becoming the first independent self-governing African American municipality in the northern U.S.  Peter Mott was a minister and self made man who offered their home as a stop for the Underground Railroad. As a prosperous property owner, his land oftentimes provided a safe haven to enslaved escapees.  Today, his home stands as a museum.  Historical documents show the importance of the site and town as many in the community worked together as freedom fighters or to do their part in assisting those to freedom.

To really experience the rich tapestry of our culture here in the Greater Philadelphia region, visiting and walking tours really put us in the space of time of our African American brothers and sisters. It is the buildings, art, and music that tell stories that we are not always able to see or hear at face value.  We continue to journey to discovery with rich and authentic narratives.

LOCAL PHILLY ACTOR DISHES ON SPORTS, FOOD, AND THE EXCITING NEW SERIES JOEY’S PLACE

by TheSpot December 13, 2023
written by TheSpot

Upon meeting local actor Frank Volpe, one immediately feels at ease.   This is due to the fact that he hails from Northeast Philadelphia and currently resides in Bucks County, PA.  During our conversation, a large Sixers poster loomed in the background solidifying his status as a Philly sports fan.   Within minutes, it became evident that Frank possessed the qualities of a friendly neighbor who takes the time to greet you and inquire about your well-being.  Frank is set to portray the lead character Joey in the highly anticipated television project, Joey’s Place.    Our discussion covered topics ranging from sports to favorite restaurants, all the while exploring why Joey’s Place is poised to become the next big sensation.

The tv series centers around a local bar/restaurant owner who dabbles in organized crime while grappling with his conscience in a tug of war between good and evil.  The voice of reason comes in the form of 12 year old actor, Hudson Chance, who plays Joey’s younger self.  “Pressure Cooker” is the pilot episode and full of dysfunctional high jinks.  Joey is smack dab in the middle of planning a heist at the restaurant when his wife makes an appearance with in-laws in tow.

The role of Joey is multi-faceted which offers an exciting opportunity for Frank to explore various characteristics.  Volpe’s skill sets include stunt work and martial arts, particularly Muay Thai.  We asked if he is able to apply those skills on set.   If a role calls for physical activity, Frank is all in.   So how did Frank connect with creators, Terry McFadden and Steve Sacavitch, and ultimately land the lead role?  According to Frank, he came across a casting call which immediately piqued his interest.  Being from Philly, Frank knew right from the start that he wanted to be a part of the series.   We asked him what made this role so appealing. and his response was that he’s looking forward to interacting with vibrant characters and filming in South Philly.  His impression is that Joey’s Place is in essence a love letter to the neighborhood.

What can audiences look forward to?  Volpe is eager to show Joey is a good guy at heart.  He acknowledges that Joey may not always make wise decisions but aspires to portray the layers of attributes to his character’s shadow self.   And what does Frank think of working with young actor Hudson Chance?  He tells us that working with kids can be fun and looks forward to learning a thing or two.

Frank is well on his way to building up his portfolio which leads us to the question of who are his biggest role models in pursuing acting full time?  If the words DeNiro and Pacino are on the tip of your tongue, you may want to think again.  Surprisingly, Frank cites his parents.  In his words, his mother was a strong advocate for doing “what makes you happy” as long as he was putting in the work and time.  It’s also easy to see the admiration for his father, who emigrated from Italy, and was able to start his own successful tile business.

Finally, as a Philadelphia native, we were curious about what makes Philly a magical place from his perspective.   Frank drew a parallel between the atmosphere of the city during the 2017-2018 Eagles season.  He noted the sense of camaraderie and connection among sports fans and general population especially during the Super Bowl.  There is an indescribable bond that exists which cannot be replicated elsewhere.  Furthermore, we inquired about Frank’s favorite spot to unwind.  He revealed that he indeed has two favorite Italian restaurants in the city.  Although he hesitates to disclose them fearing partiality, we can assure you that both establishments are authentic and thriving.    Additionally, you can find Frank rooting for …you guessed it…his favorite home town team, the Philadelphia Eagles.  Frank Volpe all in all, shares his love of acting all the while reveling in the colorful world of Joey’s Place and for that matter Philly. For more information about Joey’s Place, discover more by clicking on the following link. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/unveiling-the-world-of-joey-s-place#/

5 Surprising Culinary Uses for Lavender to Make Your Summer Pop!

by TheSpot July 5, 2023

After our visit to Field & Flock Lavender Farm, we were inspired to create recipes to embrace the season. Lavender farms are in bloom and we came up with five surprising easy uses for lavender to get your summer in gear at the beach, on the deck, or in your sunroom. Here’s a little fun fact. The word July derives from Julius Caesar. Hence the month of July represents an imperial figure of antiquity and purple symbolizing nobility and power. Don’t forget that here in the United States 4th of July is celebrated with the red and blue and combined you guessed it… makes purple! So while this misty flower is experiencing it’s peak bloom, why not make your summer pop with lavender in culinary recipes?

The fragrant smell of lavender serves as an instant de-stresser. That’s why it’s no surprise that people are re-discovering the benefits of lavender in tea, honey, and baked goods. Imagine waking up in your happy place relaxed and rejuvenated? Here are a few ideas on how to incorporate lavender in some of your dishes. Lavender is delicate and aromatic therefore makes a great companion to meats, fishes, and desserts. We recommend using the buds of the flower and preferably dry while adding to certain foods. You may very well find them at a fancy hotel, restaurant, or your favorite cocktail lounge but most likely accompanied with a steep price tag. Can you make your own and add a little fun while doing so? Absolutely! The good news you won’t have to travel far and wide for exotic ingredients. Mid-summer is the time for beach picnics, backyard barbecues, or she shed moments for yourself. Sit back, taste the sunshine, and indulge in your favorite treat!

  1. Lavender Sugar -This is rather easy. Simply add dried lavender buds to sugar and keep in a small mason jar to set aside for baking. Make your favorite cookies, cupcakes, or basically any type of dessert that is lavender inspired. A teaspoon in your coffee adds hints of floral notes.
  2. Lavender Tea -Add dried lavender buds in a diffuser while boiling tea. Once tea is hot, add the diffuser in your favorite tea for an added bonus of unwinding and calmness
  3. Lavender Ice Cream – You can actually make your own lavender infused ice cream. All that is needed is a bit of milk, heavy cream, add in some dried buds and oila!
  4. Lavender in the Oven – I started using lavender as a seasoning several years ago and it upped my cooking game for my family. Because this flower is so aromatic, less is definitely more. Roasted chicken, lamb, and fish with this fine seasoning is a game changer!
  5. Lavender Inspired Beverages -The possibilities are endless. Lavender ice tea, lavender lemonade, or lavender mojitos if you want to kick it up bring friends and summer together like bees to lavender honey. See what I did there?

Hershey, PA: America’s Sweet Spot

by TheSpot April 17, 2023
written by TheSpot

Before there was Disney World, there was Hershey, PA..  We’re not about to compare apples and oranges, but we will stake our claim on the world created by one man’s vision…and love of chocolate.

Hershey, Pennsylvania is a town that eats and breathes chocolate and, in some cases, quite literally.  Aside from the multitude of candy that is available for purchase, the aroma of chocolate disperses high in the clouds across farm fields.  Some of your favorite candy bars worth mentioning, Pay Day, York Peppermint Patties, Kit Kat and naturally Hershey Kisses are made right in this town.  If you love chocolate…well this could very well be chocolate heaven on earth.

It all starts with the vision of one Milton Snavely Hershey.  Milton Hershey was born in Derry Church, PA in 1857.   At the young age of fourteen, he began an apprenticeship to a printer.  The apprenticeship did not last very long as this was not Hershey’s calling.  He did however receive another apprenticeship to a confectioner in nearby Lancaster.  He learned how to make caramel then went on to Colorado to perfect his skill.  After some failed business ventures, Milton continued to improve upon the right recipe for making caramels.  One learned aspect was adding fresh milk to his caramels.  He landed in New York and opened up a candy company there.  Yet again, his business did not succeed but that did not stop Milton from trying again.  This time he returned home to Lancaster, PA in 1883.  It was there he founded the Lancaster Caramel Company and found great success.  Milton was interested in other food items and traveled to Switzerland to learn how to make cheese.  It was there he discovered milk chocolate.  Upon his return, he began to experiment in making his own milk chocolate.   Hilton formed the Hershey Chocolate Company.

HERSHEY’S CHOCOLATE TOWN

So what is there to do in the town of Hershey?   It turns out, quite a lot for anytime of the year. For all things chocolate, Hershey’s Chocolate World is the place.  Close your eyes and imagine yourself in the middle of a giant candy store.  Except it’s for real.  You’ll find designated stations for many of their brands.  Reese’s, Hershey Kisses, Kit Kat, and many others.  Choose your own mix and match candy, or various boxes and bags in various sizes.  Don’t forget to take a ride on the Hershey Chocolate Factory Tour.  The tour is on a slow moving coaster ride that is entertaining as well educational.  Learn a thing or two on how the chocolate is made and of course sample the end result.  What is not to love?

In another part of town, you will find luxury and pampering.  The Hershey Hotel, among everything else in the town, was a dream realized by Milton S. Hershey.  Hershey and his wife Catherine, loved to travel and often took notes.  Hershey then set to build an elegant upscale grand hotel right in the town of Hershey.  It first opened in 1933 and today is a 5 star hotel.  Stroll in the Hershey gardens surrounded by ponds and gazebos.  Indulge in the ultimate luxury of its’ world famous spa.  The spa also earned the moniker “chocolate spa” for the famed chocolate infused treatments.

HERSHEY HOTEL

The jewel of the summer season, is of course Hersheypark.  Hersheypark has the claim of being the larges amusement park in PA.  This year, Hersheypark will be open each weekend from April until the end of the year. Roller coasters, water rides, and all the amusement park fun can all be found at this haven.   In recent years, Hershey Stadium, located directly across the park, has been home to some of the world’s largest acts.   Lady Gaga, Zac Brown Band, and Def Leppard have all performed here.  Hersheypark Stadium is one of the main summer attractions in all of Pennsylvania.

HERSHEYPARK

Although there are many dining options in and outside of the park, one favorite among locals and outsiders is the Old Mill.  A large red brick building gives the impression of an old Pennsylvania farmhouse.  Inside you’ll find a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.  The dinner menu rivals premiere establishments with porterhouse pork chops, filet mignon, and salmon.    The brunch menu is first rate.  The burgers are tender and filling.  Our waitress Amy recommended the ricotta donut holes which were a sweet ending to our delicious meal.

Hershey, Pennsylvania is a top-notch destination for all seasons.  What was once a dream of a candy maker evolved to one of the country’s prime destinations to discover history, amusement, relaxation, and pampering.  How lucky are we that can enjoy all of this and more right at home!  Now that is a sweet deal!

Finding Empowerment and Healing Through Yoga

by TheSpot March 29, 2023
written by TheSpot

If you meet Danielle Gilham, you may find her humorous, unpretentious, and someone who possesses a healthy dose of sarcasm. She’s that friend you call when you have a problem and she’ll be real with you. Meaning, tell you what she really thinks and not what you want to hear. If you have that friend in life, they are the ones to hang on to. I met Danielle over twenty years ago through mutual friends. I always found her to be all of those good qualities. She is a tough Jersey girl who will give it to you straight. For decades, our social lives and entertainment consisted of hanging out at a dance club, rock club, or sports bar. Our friend groups were all part of the same social circle.

Danielle recently sat down with us to talk about her journey to health and wellness, and ultimately her life’s purpose. It is a story about discovery, passage, and purpose. Danielle’s introduction to the benefits of yoga began with her daughter. At a young age, her daughter Mikayla was suffering from severe anxiety. Danielle had taken her to therapy and even a hypnotherapist but it was doing very little to resolve her issues. One day she came across a “Yoga for Anxiety” class at her local yoga studio. To her surprise, her daughter responded very well to the class and wanted to continue to go. When Danielle asked her what was different from her therapy sessions she replied, “I realize that everyone feels scared sometimes and there is nothing wrong with me”. Danielle decided it was worth trying so they signed up for a 6-month membership.

YINOLOGY CLASS

After attending several yoga sessions with her daughter, Danielle began to not only see a significant difference in Mikayla for the better but she also felt a substantial shift in herself. Danielle credits those early yoga sessions to the two instructors, Danna Niessner and Peggy Dyer, whom with Mikayla formed a pivotal bond. Those early sessions helped Mikayla in a 360-degree turnaround in her mental health. Today, Mikayla is a young adult who follows a path of health and wellness. Mikayla occasionally succumbs to bouts of anxiety but says she now has the tools to manage it. She is currently enrolled in school for Nutrition Coaching. Nutrition has become an essential part of her healing, mentally and physically.

Years later, Danielle decided she wanted to share this experience and this gift of yoga with people to help them in their healing journeys. She enrolled in 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) at Seeds of Love in Pitman, NJ. Danielle spent 6 months with a group of amazing, like-minded, women learning and deepening her yoga practice. Part of the 200-hour training was to participate in various yoga classes to learn and observe. One night in February 2020, Danielle joined a Yin Yoga class at the same studio. February is the month of love so the Yin class focused on the heart chakra. The class was wonderful but the next day told a different story. A total sadness washed over her and she literally cried the entire day. She had no idea what was wrong. She went to her YTT teacher, Kristin Harris, and asked if this could be a result of the Yin class. Kristin answered, “absolutely”. She went on to explain how we store unprocessed emotions and by practicing Yin we can clear the pathways of energy that run through our bodies. Yin is a slow form of yoga that can clear any blockages, releasing, that energy to flow freely. (Similar to acupuncture).

DANIELLE GILHAM

This fascinated Danielle to the point of deciding to attend another class. This time the reaction was just as profound. She went to bed that night after class and began to shake uncontrollably. She felt so cold and was convinced she was coming down with a fever. There was no symptom in any way related to sickness or fever and after a couple of hours, the shaking stopped. This time she was sure it was the result of the Yin class. Danielle discussed these events with her Yin instructor, Suzi Zappile. Suzi told her it was not uncommon and to take an Epsom salt bath after each class to help clear the stagnant energy. It worked! She continued with Yin and did not have any negative effects. This experience intrigued her so much that she asked Suzi to teach her how to become a Yin instructor. Suzi had never taught Yin training as a teacher but Danielle convinced her to create a curriculum so she could learn. Suzi always wanted to do this and this was just the push she needed. She loved the idea and began working on it right away.

In the meantime, Danielle graduated from YTT200 in March of 2020 just as the pandemic hit. The yoga studios soon closed down but that did not stop her from creating a space to practice and teach classes. She continued to teach yoga classes outside in her backyard throughout the spring and summer of 2020.

Just as Danielle was delving into her journey as a yoga instructor, a trip to the ER changed her course. She had blood in her urine and the doctors thought it was kidney stones. An MRI proved different. To her unfortunate surprise, it was discovered she had a tumor in her bladder. The news was a shock but her first thought was not “OMG am I going to die, instead she asked herself, “what am I supposed to do with this? Why do I have this? What is this message”? Her reaction stemmed from her 200 hours of YTT training. She believes she would not have had this perspective otherwise.

As Danielle moved forward with the doctors, surgeries and treatments, Suzi finished her Yin curriculum called “Yinology.” The timing could not have been better. After all, what was this emotion blocking the urinary tract and causing problems? Who was Danielle directing her anger towards? What fears was she holding onto? Danielle’s studies on the subject led her to understand that a diagnosis of disease is not only physical but an energetic aspect to it as well. Danielle’s training led her down a path of re-discovery. It helped her face her own emotional trauma of growing up with a mother who suffered from severe anxiety and depression. Her family unit was unstable and eventually her parents divorced.

Danielle believes the trauma centered on her mother’s illness and never feeling safe affected her health years later. According to Danielle, she grew up with a constant fear over her mother’s well being. She held onto that fear, hiding it from the outside world. As Danielle explained, she and her sister watched her mother suffer for many years. Their mother was treated with prescription medication and was in and out of hospitals without ever receiving sufficient help. She never received the tools she needed to treat her issues. Sadly, her mother ultimately took her own life in 2017.

PEACH OF MIND OUTDOOR YOGA SPACE

Today, mental health awareness is quickly becoming an integral part of conversation due to the experiences of Danielle’s mother and the misunderstanding surrounding the disease. After Danielle’s diagnosis, her friend Suzi immediately jumped into action and began Reiki sessions for Danielle with the help of her sister Sylvia. They were still in the middle of a pandemic so the sessions were performed outside. One specific cloudy day, Sylvia performed Reiki on Danielle while Suzi played crystal healing bowls. The rain was pouring down on the tent and out of nowhere Danielle felt the warmth of the sun shining on her face. She assumed the storm had passed but that was not the case. Suzi explained that during the Reiki session she said a prayer with her hands held high toward the sky. The sun they felt was only shining on Danielle and Sylvia. The rain had not stopped but the sun knew where to find them. For Danielle, this was another profound sign that energy therapy was necessary in her healing journey. It was also another practice she had to learn how to do for herself. She is now trained in the knowledge of the Usui Reiki system of natural healing and has received level I and II attunements. Danielle knew the next few months of her life were not going to be easy but she knew that she would be okay.

After several surgeries and treatments, Danielle sought out a naturopathic doctor. The naturopath doctor provided a wellness plan that was two-part nutrition and lifestyle interventions. Danielle continues to follow this guidance including Mistletoe Therapy to remain cancer free. According to the National Library of Medicine website, Mistletoe Therapy is widely used in patient centric integrative and qualitative care.

The Power of Food: How Cooking Can Bring A Community Together for a Good Cause

by TheSpot March 23, 2023
written by TheSpot

It’s no secret that Philadelphia is known as a superlative city for dining.  North to South, Fishtown, and reaching far into the counties, our restaurant scene rivals New York and other nouveau foodie towns.  Our diversity from Armenian, Cuban, to French and Italian, is a rainbow of gustatory feasts. We spoke to local Chef Maria Campbell, Founder of Cooks Who Care, on how she is using the power of food and dining to bring mental health awareness to our region.

As the Philadelphia dining scene was growing and evolving in recent years, Scott and Maria Campbell, a husband and wife team, founded the organization six years ago as a vehicle to better serve the restaurant community.  Both chefs by trade, they began their not-for-profit organization initially as a resource to help industry professionals achieve basic health needs.

Through qualitative research, in addition to creating a YouTube channel of over 100 conversations, the couple found a pattern that the very people taking great care to prepare our optimal dining experiences, were neglecting their own health and well-being.  Their research indicated that health, particularly mental health, was at the center of burnout and other challenges. We spoke to Maria at length about how mental health awareness evolved over the years and more specifically after the era of Covid-19.

It must be aforementioned that Maria is a strong advocate in brining mental health awareness front and center of conversation.  Maria is full of insights and puts the work in everyday to bring forth this awareness. According to Maria, as with mental health awareness in general terms, industry professionals lacked the proper language to describe their internal battles.  That is to say, chefs, servers, bartenders, etc. were reluctant most of the time to admit any suffering and internalized any mental challenge they were experiencing.  Maria and her husband Scott looked for a way to change that.

Maria Campbell Founder of Cooks Who Care

Maria cites a couple of events that prompted more openness about mental health and suffering.  One was the death of celebrity chef, Anthony Bourdain.  It was then she began receiving messages thanking her for her work.  The second event was when Covid-19 came about.  Essentially the restaurant community ceased worldwide.  During this time, industry personnel began to feel empowered to express feelings of anxiety and depression.  As Maria described, there was now language to better define mental health awareness but more importantly to say that it was okay not to be okay.

Perhaps for the first time, these challenges although difficult were being heard and addressed as well give those suffering a safe space.  Maria believes a lot of good came about pertaining to working conditions and health and well-being on the job.  As Maria says, “Covid allowed permission to have a life.”  She believes that today the working model has changed the industry at large.  Examples including better working hours and increased health benefits.

Maria and Scott are working to set up mini grants to fund mental healthcare.  The Campbells also put out Cooks Who Care Cook Book of 500 limited editions printed which 100% of the proceeds are towards the fund.   Maria also set up a series of special events entitled “Break the Ice Nights.”  Participating restaurants are allocating a portion of the proceeds towards the grants that Maria and Scott are hoping to procure.

The Spot recently spent a “Break the Ice Night” at Oloroso, a Townsend Wentz owned restaurant, in the heart of Center City Philadelphia.  Specializing in Spanish tapas such as croquetas and grilled octopus, it was an excellent way of being introduced to a restaurant while supporting a good cause.  Maria stated how thrilled she is by how the restaurants are rallying together to participate in these events and the amazing support they have received.

OLOROSO

As we talked, savored our plates, sipped on hearty red wines from Portugal, and even struck up a conversation with a stranger, it was an experience that served as a reminder that community and conversation is alive and well in the City of Brotherly Love.

For more information on how to support this good cause, visit cookswhocare.org.  The Campbells are also holding a fundraiser raffle tto reach their financial goal of $15k.  The drawing is on March 30th so there is time to donate at https://bit.ly/Raffle_CooksWhoCare. Lastly, for a free sample of Cooks Who Care Cook Book, sign up for our newsletter today!  Hurry as it is available in limited supply.

We will continue to follow Maria and Scott Campbell and more events are in the works.  The Philly dining scene is lively and thriving and if there is one thing we do best, it is to raise our glasses to support our communities.
