Historic Smithville New Jersey: Where to Shop, Eat & Unwind

by TheSpot November 19, 2025
written by TheSpot
Historic Smithville

When was the last time you truly disconnected?

As a professional woman juggling calendars, commitments, and constant connectivity, finding authentic experiences that nourish your soul can feel impossible. That’s exactly why Historic Smithville, NJ deserves a prominent place on your must-visit list.

The Perfect Setting for Meaningful Connection

My circle of friends and I have a sacred ritual: every few months, we block our calendars for what matters most—each other. Between board meetings, soccer practices, and weekend obligations, these gatherings require intention. This particular weekend, after weeks of coordinating schedules, we chose Historic Smithville as our destination—and it exceeded every expectation.

More Than a Destination: A Portal to Intentional Living

What struck me immediately wasn’t just Smithville’s picturesque charm, but how it creates space for what we’re all craving: presence. In our hyperconnected world, this village—nestled in Galloway Township, just 12 miles from Atlantic City—offers something rare: a place designed for wandering, savoring, and genuine conversation.

The Origin Story: Contrary to appearances, Smithville was never a traditional town. It began as a 1950s stagecoach stop that evolved into a 42-seat restaurant—now the acclaimed Smithville Inn. Today, it’s a carefully curated village of over 60 specialty shops, galleries, and eateries spread across a scenic lakeside setting.

Curated Experiences for the Discerning Traveler

Artisan Shopping That Speaks to Your Values

Upon arrival, local artisan vendors greet you with handcrafted treasures—the antithesis of mass-produced retail therapy. We spent hours exploring boutiques that celebrate craftsmanship and individuality:

Home & Wellness:

  • Indulgence Home Bath and Beyond: Small-batch candles and soaps that transform self-care rituals into luxurious moments
  • The Christmas Shoppe: Year-round holiday magic with ornaments, collectibles, and seasonal décor that elevates your home’s ambiance
  • The Candle Shoppe: Hand-poured candles in sophisticated scents—perfect for creating your sanctuary at home

Fashion & Accessories:

  • Finders Keepers: Unique jewelry, accessories, and gifts that make a statement without saying a word
  • The Hat Box: From sun hats to elegant fascinators, headwear that complements your personal style
  • Brighton Collectibles: Premium leather goods, jewelry, and accessories for the woman who appreciates quality craftsmanship

Gourmet & Specialty Foods:

  • A Tour of Italy: Where I discovered authentic Italian pastas, artisan sauces, and yes, a charming book of Italian folk magic—perfect for the woman who has everything
  • The Fudge Shop: Small-batch confections and chocolates ideal for gifting (or keeping for yourself)
  • The Popcorn Shop: Gourmet popcorn in unexpected flavors—a surprisingly sophisticated snack
  • Tomasello Winery: New Jersey’s award-winning winery offers tastings in their Smithville location (because why shouldn’t your afternoon include a crisp Chardonnay?)

Art & Collectibles:

  • The Toy Soldier: Nostalgic collectibles and vintage toys that spark conversation
  • Village Greene Antique Gallery: Curated antiques and vintage finds for the woman with distinctive taste
  • The Quilt Shop: Handcrafted quilts and textiles that celebrate traditional craftsmanship
  • The Art Gallery: Local artists’ work featuring South Jersey landscapes and coastal scenes

Books & Stationery:

  • The Book Nook: Independent bookstore featuring regional authors, bestsellers, and unique titles you won’t find in chain stores
  • The Card & Gift Shop: Thoughtful stationery, greeting cards, and small luxuries for meaningful gift-giving

Scenic Experiences Beyond Shopping

Lake Meone: The centerpiece of the village, this tranquil lake features picturesque footbridges perfect for photography and mindfulness. Benches dot the shoreline—ideal spots for continuing conversations or simply sit in quiet contemplation.

The Smithville Carousel: A restored vintage carousel that adds whimsy to the experience (and makes for delightful photos)

Paddle Boats (Seasonal): Explore the lake at your own pace during warmer months

Walking Trails: Winding paths throughout the village encourage leisurely exploration and discovery

Culinary Excellence Worth Planning Around

Our group reserved a table at The Smithville Inn, and this is where Smithville transcends from charming to exceptional. The colonial-era ambiance—complete with fireplaces and period details—sets the stage for elevated comfort cuisine.

Standout Menu Moments:

  • Harvest Sangria & Pumpkin Spice White Russian: Seasonal cocktails that balance sophistication with playfulness
  • Smithville Chicken Pot Pie: This isn’t your cafeteria pot pie. Flaky, rustic pastry encasing tender chicken and vegetables in rich gravy—it’s the culinary equivalent of a cashmere wrap on a crisp day
  • Crab Cake Sandwich on Brioche: Fresh-caught crab showcasing the region’s coastal proximity
  • Smithville Burger: Elevated comfort food executed to perfection
Smithville Inn Menu

Reservations strongly recommended, especially for weekend brunch or dinner.

Additional Dining Options:

  • Fred & Ethel’s Lantern Light Tavern & Restaurant: Casual American fare in a relaxed pub atmosphere
  • Sweetwater Casino Grill: Waterfront dining with views of Lake Meone
  • Colonial Bakery: Fresh-baked goods, gourmet coffee, and light breakfast options—perfect for starting your day

Why This Matters for You

In a culture that glorifies busyness, Smithville offers permission to slow down. The village’s pedestrian-only walkways, footbridges crossing the lake, and absence of corporate chains create an environment where conversations deepen and creativity flows.

Strategic Location Benefits:

  • 40 minutes from Philadelphia – Perfect for a morning departure
  • 15 minutes from Garden State Parkway – Easily accessible yet feels worlds away
  • Proximity to Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge – Extend your retreat with nature immersion (just 10 minutes away)
  • Near Stockton University’s Performing Arts Center – Consider combining your visit with world-class performances
  • Renault Winery – Another acclaimed winery just 15 minutes away for extended wine country exploration

Planning Your Visit

The Real Value: Reclaiming Time That Matters

Looking back at my childhood day trips, I realize what my parents understood intuitively: shared experiences create the architecture of our lives. As professional women, we’re experts at optimizing schedules—but are we protecting space for joy, vulnerability, and authentic connection?

Historic Smithville isn’t just a destination; it’s an invitation to honor yourself and the relationships that sustain you. Whether you’re planning a girls’ weekend, a solo retreat for creative inspiration, or a thoughtful escape with your partner, this hidden gem delivers experiences that linger long after you return to your inbox.

The village’s carefully preserved architecture, waterfront setting, and commitment to independent retailers create an atmosphere where you can exhale, explore, and rediscover what brings you joy. Every bridge crossed, every boutique discovered, every shared laugh over seasonal cocktails becomes part of a tapestry of memories that remind us why we work so hard in the first place—to create space for moments that truly matter.

From the City of Brotherly Love to the Eternal City: A Travel Guide to Rome’s Rich Heritage

by TheSpot October 13, 2025
written by TheSpot
Rome

From Philadelphia to Rome with Love- A Travel and Dining Guide

Discovering Rome’s Timeless Beauty and Italy’s Culinary Treasures

Italy captivates travelers with 3,000 years of history, iconic landmarks, world-renowned artwork, and, of course, unforgettable food. Italian summers can be like a passionate romance—you keep returning for the beauty, the passion, and perhaps even love itself. That’s why we created a special guide from Philadelphia to Rome with love.

Why Rome is Called the Eternal City

Rome is a city that loves to love. What does that mean? It’s the warm embrace of the Mediterranean sun, the cheerful hotel workers ready to greet you, and the barista who expertly pours your perfect cup of espresso. Walking along ancient cobblestone streets, shopkeepers beckon you inside like sirens, tempting customers with opulent fashion items.

Must-Visit Rome Attractions

During my visit, I explored my favorite Roman landmarks:

  • The Pantheon – Ancient architectural marvel
  • Piazza Navona – Baroque splendor and street artists
  • Trevi Fountain – Iconic fountain and wish-making tradition

I walked from Campo dei Fiori, sampled authentic gelato, and immersed myself in local culture. Restaurant owners enthusiastically shared their menus, asking where I was from. Surprisingly, Philadelphia and Rocky are synonymous worldwide.

Best Cacio e Pepe in Rome: Roma Sparita Restaurant

I strolled through the Roman Forum and along Via Condotti before having dinner at one of my absolute favorite spots on the planet—a hidden gem coined “Restaurant X” by the incomparable Anthony Bourdain. He kept the name secret to prevent tourists from overwhelming what he deemed the best cacio e pepe dish in the world.

Over ten years ago, my family did some sleuthing, and we discovered it’s Roma Sparita. I booked my reservation well in advance to enjoy the only dish that matters: cacio e pepe served in a crispy parmesan bowl. This bucket-list-worthy experience did not disappoint.

Hotel Campo di Fiori: Perfect Rome Accommodation

My stay at Hotel Campo di Fiori was enhanced by valuable tips from the hotel manager, Valentina. The location is perfect—just a few streets from Piazza Navona, surrounded by quaint boutiques and authentic Roman charm.

Abruzzo and Molise: Hidden Italian Regions Worth Exploring

After falling in love with the Eternal City again, I traveled south to the Abruzzo/Molise region. Inspired by Stanley Tucci’s show “Searching for Italy,” I planned a pasta-making class and a special lunch on a trabucco (traditional fishing platform).

Authentic Italian Pasta Making Class

We learned how to make traditional orecchiette and cavatelli pasta. Another day, we relaxed on the fishing wharf, sipping Montepulciano wine while watching waves gently roll across the beautiful blue Adriatic Sea.

Cultural Discoveries in Abruzzo/Molise

A good friend invited me to an outdoor book discussion and art exhibit featuring Nabila DiPilla, a landscape architect and founder of I Montenauti. This organization promotes agricultural and cultural initiatives in the Abruzzo/Molise region, an area rich in alpine and marine resources. Nabila expands regional awareness through landscaping art and education.

After the book talk, I met authors and educators with ties to Ohio and other parts of the U.S., naturally extending invitations to visit Philadelphia. Nabila comes from a renowned background—her father and uncle, Carlo and Luciano DiPilla, were famed naval architects in Rome and internationally. She has the distinct honor of being named after the original ship from the Bond film “Never Say Never Again.” Originally built and named Nabila, it was sold several times but became famous in the movie as The Flying Saucer.

Philadelphia’s Guide to Italian Dolce Vita: Best Italian Restaurants and Cafes

My time in Italy gave me renewed appreciation for the history, cobblestone streets, boutiques, and dining in Philadelphia, our City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. Here’s a curated list of Dolce Vita moments you can experience in Philadelphia.

1. Fiorella – Best Cacio e Pepe in Philadelphia

What to order: Cacio e Pepe Pasta

There really is no comparison. Fiorella, previously Fiorella’s Sausage, is located on South 8th Street in the heart of Philadelphia’s Italian Market. After operating for 125 years, the original family made the difficult decision to sell their historic business. Restaurateur Marc Vetri transformed the iconic name into a modern restaurant while honoring the family’s original sausage recipes.

Cacio e pepe, a classic Roman dish, consists of Pecorino Romano cheese and black pepper in a silky sauce (no meat). It’s all about technique, and Fiorella’s serves one of the best versions this side of the Tiber River.

2. Anthony’s Coffee House – Authentic Italian Pastries

What to order: Cappuccino and Maritozzo

Maritozzi are rich Roman pastries that look like open-faced rolls stuffed with whipped cream. For a bolder flavor, try the pistachio version. Anthony’s Coffee House in the Italian Market serves authentic maritozzi, but the real treat is sitting in their outdoor cafe on a Sunday morning discussing the day’s upcoming game.

3. Borromini Ristorante – Seasonal Italian Delicacies

What to order: Stuffed Squash Blossoms

If you’ve never experienced the melt-in-your-mouth bliss of stuffed squash blossoms with ricotta, you’re missing out. This is one of my absolute favorite Italian delicacies. Until recently, I could only find it on menus during trips abroad. The squash blossom is the flower of the zucchini plant, in season during summer months. They’re not easy to find in American markets, so grab them while you can. Lightly fried tempura-style and stuffed with soft, rich cheese—it’s pure heaven.

4. Port Cape May – Fresh Seafood with Ocean Views

What to order: Anything Seafood

Simply named Port, this Cape May restaurant is one of the area’s newest dining destinations, boasting an outdoor waterfront space with spectacular views. Dishes range from crab cakes to red snapper and sea bass tacos. The menu changes seasonally but consistently offers delightful options. Plenty of vegetarian choices are available if you’re not fish-inclined, and you’ll still enjoy the unbeatable waterfront experience.

5. Gran Caffè L’Aquila – Authentic Italian Gelato

What to order: Gelato (any flavor)

We would be remiss not to include gelato on this list—it would be a travesty. I can honestly say I never had true gelato outside of Rome until Gran Caffè L’Aquila opened its doors in 2014. In their quest for authenticity, they employed Italian Gelato Champion Stefano Biasini, elevating gelato to an elevated confection and building a legion of devoted fans. Just don’t call it ice cream.

Plan Your Italian-Inspired Philadelphia Experience

Whether you’re reminiscing about Italian travels or planning your first trip to Rome, Philadelphia offers authentic Italian experiences that rival the Eternal City. From Roman-style pasta to authentic gelato, our city brings la dolce vita to the East Coast.

From Courtroom to Cafe: How One Local Newtown Square Lawyer Made a Powerful Pivot

by TheSpot October 2, 2025
written by TheSpot
Toastique

In the Spotlight: Women-Owned Wellness Experiences

Let’s be honest—most mornings for busy women like us start with grabbing a quick bagel and coffee while juggling work, school drop-offs, or a packed schedule of errands. It’s go-go-go, and breakfast often becomes an afterthought. But what if your morning routine could nourish your body, mind, and soul—without sacrificing convenience or taste? One local business owner is doing just that.

Meet Toastique, a new wellness café in Newtown Square that’s redefining what it means to eat well. From healthy breakfast options to wholesome brunch and lunch offerings, Toastique is the perfect blend of nourishment, flavor, and community.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Andrea Rea, the inspiring woman behind this local gem. Formerly an attorney and professor of law, Andrea made a powerful pivot into the world of health-focused food entrepreneurship. Like many professional women, she experienced a shift in priorities—choosing wellness, sustainability, and community over corporate life. And with that, Toastique was born.

Local Business Owner, Andrea Rea of Toastique Newtown Square

A Local Café with a Wellness Mission

Toastique isn’t your typical breakfast spot. Every item on the menu is designed with intention—from cold-pressed juice shots packed with nutrients to gluten-free, allergy-conscious meals made in a carefully maintained kitchen. Whether you’re vegan, gluten-free, or just trying to eat cleaner, there’s something for every lifestyle.

Andrea emphasized that all products are sustainably and responsibly sourced. Toastique partners with local farmers and fair-trade coffee roasters, ensuring fresh ingredients and ethical practices from farm to table. It’s part of her commitment to creating not just a menu—but a mission.

Superfood Shots and Supercharged Mornings

One standout on the menu? The wellness shots. These small but mighty drinks are freshly made in-house each day using 100% natural ingredients. With varieties like immunity boosters and energy refreshers, Andrea describes them as “intense hits of nutrition”—perfect for anyone looking to power up their day the healthy way.

A Space That Builds Community

Toastique isn’t just a café—it’s a space designed for connection. The open, welcoming layout includes both cozy indoor seating and a beautiful outdoor area, ideal for meeting friends, enjoying solo time, or even hosting wellness events. The calming decor and clear, accessible menu make it a favorite among locals seeking a more mindful dining experience.

And the community has taken notice. Andrea shared that she’s already received partnership requests from local organizations eager to collaborate—a testament to Toastique’s growing impact.

From Courtrooms to Cold-Pressed Juice

Andrea’s journey from attorney to franchise owner is nothing short of inspiring. She candidly shared that entrepreneurship comes with more responsibility than her legal career—but the personal fulfillment makes it all worth it. The positive feedback, the meaningful connections, and the chance to live her passion have made every challenge worthwhile.

We’re proud to feature Andrea Rea as our October “In the Spotlight: Women-Owned Experiences” honoree. Her story is a reminder that it’s never too late to pivot, pursue your passion, and create something that feeds more than just the appetite—it feeds the soul.

Philadelphia Zoo: Why This Historic Treasure Should Be Your Next Adventure

by TheSpot June 6, 2025
written by TheSpot
Philadelphia Zoo

Remember when zoos were just a quick stop with the kids to see a tired lion behind glass? Those days are officially over! The Philadelphia Zoo, with the unique distinction of being America’s first zoo, has transformed into an absolute must-visit destination that’ll make you forget you’re even in the city. Whether you’re planning a date, family outing, or just need to escape the daily grind, this place has something magical waiting for you.

Galapagos Tortoise

Meet the Golden Girls: The Cutest Celebrity Quartet You’ve Never Heard Of

Move over Hollywood – Philadelphia has its own Golden Girls, and they’re absolutely adorable! Dorothy, Sophia, Rose, and Blanche aren’t retirement home residents; they’re the newest superstars at the Philadelphia Zoo. These four Western Santa Cruz Galápagos tortoise hatchlings were born to century-old parents Mommy and Abrazzo, making Mommy the oldest first-time mother of her species. Talk about defying expectations!

You can visit these tiny celebrities inside the Reptile and Amphibian building, where they’re busy being impossibly cute and totally Instagram-worthy. Fair warning: you might spend way more time here than planned just watching these little legends explore their habitat.

Zootopiaries: Where Art Meets Nature in the Most Spectacular Way

Picture this: life-sized animal sculptures made entirely of living plants and flowers scattered throughout the zoo grounds. The Philadelphia Zoo partnered with the Philadelphia Horticultural Society to create these breathtaking botanical masterpieces that’ll have your camera working overtime.

Zootopiaries

These aren’t just pretty decorations – they’re intricate works of art that change with the seasons. Each sculpture tells a story while providing the perfect backdrop for those special photos you’ll actually want to share. Whether it’s an anniversary, birthday, or just a Tuesday that needs brightening, these zootopiaries create magical moments you won’t find anywhere else.

Giraffe Philadelphia Zoo

The Giraffe Encounter: Live Your Wildlife Dreams

Ever fantasized about feeding a giraffe? Stop dreaming and start planning! For a small additional fee, you can purchase tickets for an intimate encounter with Stella, Abigail, and Bea – three gentle giants who stand 8 to 15 feet tall and have personalities as big as their height.

These magnificent creatures love snacking on leaves and herbs, and they’re surprisingly gentle when taking treats from your hand. It’s an experience that connects you with wildlife in a way that photos and documentaries simply can’t match. The encounter is limited, so booking ahead is essential if you want to cross this off your bucket list.

PECO Primate Reserve: Your Closest Relatives Await

The world’s most fascinating primates call the PECO Primate Reserve home, and spending time here is like getting a glimpse into our own evolutionary story. Watch lemurs, gorillas, and various monkey species interact in carefully designed habitats that allow their natural behaviors to shine.

What’s remarkable is observing how similar their social interactions are to human behavior. You’ll find yourself recognizing familiar gestures, expressions, and social dynamics that remind you just how connected we all are. It’s educational, entertaining, and surprisingly moving all at once.

Ready to Rediscover the Magic?

The Philadelphia Zoo isn’t just keeping up with modern expectations – it’s setting the standard for what a world-class zoo experience should be. From celebrity tortoise babies to giraffe encounters that fulfill childhood dreams, every corner offers something unexpected and delightful.

EASY FAMILY HOLIDAY BAKING RECIPES TO START A NEW TRADITION

by TheSpot December 14, 2024
written by TheSpot
Cookie

By Ella Colarossi

There’s no better scent during the holiday season than the smell of fresh-baked cookies wafting
through the air when you come home. My family takes it a step further, baking enough cookies
to feed a small army. My name is Ella Colarossi, and one of my favorite holiday traditions is our
family’s cookie-baking marathon. Each year, we make over 15 different types of cookies, from
cherished family recipes to new finds that quickly become traditions of their own. This isn’t just a
baking session—it’s a full family affair that has been a part of my life for as long as I can
remember.
The main bakers are my mom, grandma, two sisters, and me. My dad and brother are the
official taste testers, though we don’t trust them with the baking (they’d probably burn the
cookies if we let them try!). We crank up the Christmas carols and bake all day long. But cookie
baking isn’t just a one-day event for us—it’s a season-long tradition that begins in
mid-November and stretches all the way through to Christmas Eve. We even have a second
freezer dedicated solely to cookie storage.
This tradition was started by my dad’s mother, my Nana. She was the best baker I knew, always
with an endless supply of cookies when we visited her. Though she has passed, her
cookie-baking legacy lives on. We use her recipes every year. We give cookies as gifts, creating
homemade plates for friends and family. While everyone has their favorites, the most requested
are our molasses cookies, ooey gooey cookies, and lemon cookies. Some of these recipes are
family secrets, passed down through generations, while others have been collected over the
years from various sources. But no matter where they come from, they’ve all become an integral
part of our family tradition.

“Lemony Slice-and-Bakes”
Makes: About 50 Cookies
2 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour
1⁄2 tsp. kosher salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temp
3/4 cup sugar
2 tbsp. finely grates lemon zest
1 tsp. vanilla extract
4 large egg yolks
Icing:
1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
sanding sugar
Whisk flour and salt in a medium bowl, set aside. On medium-high speed, beat butter, sugar,
lemon zest, and vanilla until light and fluffy (about 3 mins). Add egg yolks; beat just to blend.
Reduce speed to low; add flour mixture and beat, just to blend. Divide dough in half; roll each
half into a 10″ – long log about 1 3/4″ in diameter. Wrap in plastic and chill until firm, about 1
hour. Keep Chilled. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut each log into 1/4″ thick rounds and bake

on parchment lined baking sheets. Bake until cookies are firm and golden brown around edges,
about 16-18 mins. Let cool for one minute before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
Drizzle with icing and dust with sanding sugar.

“Chocolate Ooey Gooey Cookies”
Makes: 2 Dozen
1 (8-ounce) brick cream cheese, room temperature
1 stick butter, room temperature
1 egg90op[=[-
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (18-ounce) box moist chocolate cake mix Confectioners’ sugar for dusting
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream the cream cheese
and butter until smooth. Beat in the egg. Then beat in the vanilla extract. Beat in the cake mix.
Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours to firm up so that you can roll the batter into balls. Roll the
chilled batter into tablespoon sized balls and then roll them in confectioner’s sugar. Place on an
ungreased cookie sheet, 2 inches apart. Bake 12 minutes. The cookies will remain soft and
“gooey.” Cool completely and sprinkle with more confectioners’ sugar, if desired.

“Mammy’s Molasses Tung Cookies”
Makes: 5-6 Dozen
1 cup butter
1/2 cup Crisco
1⁄2 cup mild baking molasses
2 eggs (beaten)
2 cups sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. ginger
4 tsp. baking soda 5 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
Directions:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Cream sugar with butter and Crisco. Add eggs and molasses. Mix
dry ingredients together and add gradually to the creamed mixture. Make finger like rolls and roll
in sugar. Bake for 10 minutes on ungreased cookie sheets.

Our Small Business Feature That Makes Gift Giving Joyful!

by TheSpot November 30, 2024
written by TheSpot
Small Business Saturday

The autumn season is well underway and it’s a time of transition in many ways.  The leaves turn colors, preparing for end of year finances, budgeting for the holidays, and overall reflecting on our past and future goals.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday campaigns descend in blitz mode especially here in the U.S. almost as a nature calling of the impending holiday season.  Small Business Saturday has carved out its own little niche as a gentle reminder that sometimes less is more.  More and more, we are recognizing the importance of shopping small as a show of support but also adding meaning to well intentioned thought and effort of gift giving.  What do we mean by that?  Well connecting is part of the human experience.  Connecting with our neighbors, our community, and family makes us feel good, right?  At least it’s supposed to.  When we practice uplifting the important people in our lives, we uplift ourselves.

The past few years, The Spot Magazine has met many business owners that are creating livelihoods to provide everyday experiences.  By creating experiences, they are creating joy not only for themselves but for others.  That’s why we put together a list of small business owners who are creating this type of joy that is unique and special.  More importantly, they are part of our beloved community working hard to bring all of those qualities to you.

Field and Flock Lavender Farm

We visited Field and Flock Lavender Farm in Woodstown, NJ and we instantly fell in love with the farm.  Lavender season is on full display during the months of July and August but owners, George and Kimberly, work year round providing high quality lavender products.  Products are sold right in their farm location but it is a worthwhile experience to pick up hand crafted gifts surely delighting recipients…or yourself for that matter.  My personal favorites are the luxurious body cream and cocoa powder! https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=field+and+flock

Care Package Bakes

Care Package Bakes was founded by home baker, Elisa Ludwig.  We visited her home and received a warm welcome.  An author and writer, Elisa created a unique concept by transforming her passion for baking into a small batch baking business.  Her assorted baked treats are the perfect bite size melt in your mouth bits of heaven.  What is especially unique is that Elisa incorporates seasonal ingredients and combinations of flavors that compliment the season or simply create something entirely new.  No matter what you choose out of the box, your senses will surely thank you. https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=care+package

Morning Glori Farmette

The Spot Magazine visited the farm and we met Angela who shared a little of her story on how she and husband Brian, began the farm.  She now has a growing brood and the farm enjoys many activities and events for kids and adults alike.  Why not sponsor an alpaca?  Cuties like Willow, Hershey, and Maribelle will steal your heart but you’ll never be too far away.  You can find so many personalized gifts in stuffed animals, mittens, scarves, hats and so much more.  Items made from  the very best alpaca wool are sustainable and support not only the farm but the surrounding community.  A must add on your checklist! https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=morning+gl

Multi Media Audio

We met and spoke to Megan Negron Dalton, co-owner, of audio engineering company, Multi Media Audio.  We loved featuring Megan and how she is breaking barriers in the audio space.  Why this would make this a great gift?  One of the features of Multi Media Audio,in addition to providing audio engineering services for music and film, is that they are heavily involved in all forms of audio content.  Want to start a podcast?  Megan has you covered.  Do you want to uplevel your content creation?  Multi Media Audio can certainly help you out with that.  If we have a loved one who is trying to break in the biz, sometimes a little extra help can go a long way.  A session or consultation is a great gift for helping a loved one get one step closer to realizing their dreams.  https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=multi+media

Adore Redecor

Jennifer Armstrong has a passion for upcycling antique furniture.  So much so that when she left the corporate world, Jennifer turned her hobby into a local enterprise.  You can find Jennifer on Instagram under Adore Redecor.  What we love about Jennifer is that she offers a unique service in refinishing and upcycling quality furniture, but offers an array of inside knowledge and tips on antique shopping and DIY projects.  All you have to do is look around and rather than throwing out good quality furniture or dinnerware passed down from previous generations, give those prized possessions new life.  Jennifer can help you do that or give valuable insight about vintage shopping for one of a kind gifts that have history and a story to tell.  https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=adore+redecor

Botanically Blurred

Have you ever thought of having your own house or commercial plant stylist?  We found one in Alexa Fornicola.  Alexa is founder of Botanically Blurred, a commercial and residential plant design and maintenance company.  Alexa’s super power is taking in several factors such as your space, lifestyle, and personality to combine these ingredients and voilá!  Sounds simple but Alexa has a gift in curating your space into an oasis that is an extension of you.  You and your own unique beautiful self.  Looking for a sentimental housewarming gift?  Give the gift of plants and an actual designer to come with it!  https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=botanically+blurred

Regardless of how and where you shop, if you take a moment and see all the wonderful small businesses around you, there is nothing like picking up a gift that gives a sense of comfort, warmth, friendship, or love like giving something that is unique, memorable, and a story that is uniquely and lovable you.

The Guild House Hotel: A Luxury Boutique Hotel

by TheSpot October 23, 2024
written by TheSpot
Guild House Hotel

Two questions often presented to me are should we see the Liberty Bell and where to find the best cheesesteaks.  I always answer yes to the first and I usually share my personal favorites with the second.  Where to stay however can require some thought.  Visitors and locals often do not associate the City of Brotherly Love with significant roles of historical influential women.  The Spot recently visited The Guild House Hotel, a luxurious boutique property centered in the heart of Philadelphia. One of the distinctive features of the property is that it was once home to the New Century Guild and has since evolved into contemporary elegance.

Located at 13th and Locust Streets, we were greeted by Alex, the Director of Hotel Operations, at our arrival. She guided us throughout the property and shared its history. The establishment is a National Historic Landmark and was once a private home to the New Century Guild during the 19th century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Century_Guild

Alex passionately detailed the Guild’s background and introduced us to its founder, Eliza Sproat Turner, a suffragette, abolitionist, and author. This residence served as a gathering place for women, allowing them to meet in public without needing permission from their husbands. Even after living in the city my entire life, I was captivated by the stories of these remarkable women and their achievements.

One of the more enjoyable aspects of the hotel is The Lounge, where members of the Guild would gather to discuss ideas, read, or enjoy tea and coffee. This unique hotel reveals the untold stories of these women. While I looked around, I was reminded of the HBO show The Gilded Age, which portrays women asserting themselves and sharing new ideas. The decor creates a welcoming atmosphere filled with books, vintage phones, typewriters, and comfortable furniture. There is an instant vibe that inspires conversation, activism, and expression.  It’s readily apparent, The Lounge is just as an important focal point today as it was in the early days.

Guild House Hotel

The hotel resembles a residential row home and underwent a three-year renovation by ROHE Creative, a woman-owned interior design firm based in Philadelphia. https://www.rohecreative.com. Each of the twelve rooms is named after a member of the New Century Guild, featuring elegant and refined decor fostering emotional connections and positive memories. This setup also serves to educate visitors about the lasting influence of these women.

We found The Guild Hotel charming and delightful.  Conveniently situated near popular attractions like The Reading Terminal Market, Independence Mall, and Rittenhouse Square, the hotel is easily accessible for tourists and locals alike.  Philly is a walkable city therefore any of these main attractions are reachable in minutes.  Additionally, Philadelphia is bike friendly.  Bike lanes are increasingly part of the transportation outlook and safe for recreation and family-friendly activities.

A visit to the Guild House Hotel is valuable for anyone, making it an ideal location for special events, overnight stays, or cityscapes. The real fun is exploring all the diverse cafes and restaurants from around the globe nearby. Lastly, as we walk through the hallways of the hotel and look around at the names of the members, it serves as a gentle reminder to immerse ourselves in the present moment. You can learn about planning your perfect cityscape here http://guildhousehotel.com.
