The Simple Joys of a Cape May Enchanting Escape

by TheSpot August 5, 2025
written by TheSpot
Cape May

Victorian Elegance Meets the Modern Soul

Finding yourself in America’s oldest seaside resort, where time slows down and inspiration flows as freely as the Atlantic breeze.

In a world where your calendar runs your life and your phone buzzes with endless demands, Cape May, New Jersey offers something increasingly rare: permission to pause. This isn’t just another beach destination cluttering your Instagram feed. This is where Victorian grandeur whispers stories of resilience, where whale migrations remind you that some journeys are worth taking slowly, and where the rhythm of waves gradually replaces the relentless tick of daily life.

Whether you’re juggling work deadlines, managing a household, raising children, or simply seeking moments of peace in your busy life, you’ve mastered the art of keeping everything together. But when was the last time you allowed yourself to wander without a destination? Cape May isn’t just a place to visit—it’s a place to remember who you are beneath all the roles you play.

The Victorian Soul That Still Beats Strong

Cape May’s crown jewel isn’t hidden—it’s impossible to miss. The largest collection of Victorian architecture in America lines the streets like a pastel dreamscape, each gingerbread house more elaborate than the last. But here’s what the guidebooks don’t tell you: these aren’t museum pieces frozen in amber. They’re living, breathing testament to women who, over a century ago, ran boarding houses, entertained guests, and built businesses in an era when such independence was revolutionary.

Walk Congress Street in the early morning, coffee in hand, and you’ll feel their presence. The Chalfonte Hotel, operating since 1876, still serves dinner family-style, encouraging strangers to become friends over shared stories. The Victorian houses aren’t just pretty facades—they’re reminders that women have always found ways to create beauty and community, even within constraints.

The Southern Mansion, with its sweeping wraparound porches and meticulously maintained gardens, offers more than luxury accommodations. It offers perspective. Here, you can sip wine on a veranda where nineteenth-century women plotted business ventures and social reforms, their conversations carried on the same salt air that now carries yours.

Hidden Gems That Reward the Curious

While tour buses discharge passengers at the obvious attractions, Cape May’s true treasures reveal themselves to those who venture beyond the expected path. The Emlen Physick Estate’s grounds hide a secret garden where medicinal herbs still grow according to Victorian healing traditions—a quiet space perfect for anyone who’s forgotten the restorative power of green spaces and solitude.

Venture to Sunset Beach, not for the crowds that gather for the evening show, but for the morning hours when you can search for Cape May diamonds—clear quartz crystals polished smooth by centuries of waves. There’s something profoundly centering about walking this beach at sunrise, pockets filling with these natural gems while your mind empties of everything except the present moment.

The Cape May Bird Observatory offers another kind of hidden treasure. During migration seasons, you can witness thousands of birds following ancient flyways, their instinctual wisdom a reminder that sometimes the journey matters more than the destination. Women often identify with these migrants—constantly moving, adapting, finding strength in community while maintaining individual purpose. For moms traveling with children, the observatory’s junior naturalist programs turn bird watching into an adventure that creates lasting memories while teaching kids about conservation.

For a truly unique experience, visit the Cape May Fire Department Museum on a Tuesday afternoon when volunteer curator Jim McCloskey shares stories not found in any official history. His tales of women who fought fires disguised as men, and later became the backbone of the community’s emergency response, will resonate with any woman who’s ever had to prove herself or juggle multiple roles. Kids love the vintage fire trucks, making this a perfect stop for families seeking both entertainment and inspiration.

Whale Watching: Lessons from the Deep

The waters off Cape May teem with life from April through December, making it one of the East Coast’s premier whale watching destinations. But this isn’t about checking another experience off your bucket list—it’s about encountering something larger than your daily concerns.

Standing on the deck of the Cape May Whale Watcher as a humpback breaches fifty yards away, you’ll understand why ancient cultures saw whales as keepers of wisdom. These creatures migrate thousands of miles annually, following patterns older than human civilization. They travel alone yet somehow find each other across vast oceans. They communicate through songs that carry for miles underwater.

Modern women often find profound parallels in these magnificent creatures. Like whales, we navigate vast territories, maintain long-distance relationships, and somehow manage to find our pod when we need support. Whether you’re a single woman charting your own course, a mom coordinating family schedules across multiple commitments, or someone balancing work and personal life, the whales of Cape May waters—humpbacks, finbacks, minkes, and occasionally blue whales—offer lessons in pacing. They don’t hurry. They surface when they need air, dive when they need depth, and trust their instincts completely.

Captain Jeff Stewart of the Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center doesn’t just point out whales—he helps passengers understand their behavior, their intelligence, their family structures. Many women leave these trips with a new appreciation for the balance between independence and interdependence, between individual goals and collective wisdom. Families particularly enjoy how the experience brings multiple generations together in shared wonder, creating stories that grandmothers, mothers, and daughters will retell for years.

The best whale watching happens during the quieter weekday trips in late fall, when tourist crowds have thinned but whale activity remains high. There’s something magical about sharing this experience with a smaller group of intentional travelers, all of you united in wonder at creatures who’ve mastered the art of living purposefully. https://capemaywhalewatcher.com/

A Dining Scene That Nourishes More Than Hunger

Cape May’s culinary landscape reflects its character: sophisticated yet unpretentious, rooted in tradition yet constantly evolving. This isn’t about Michelin stars or celebrity chefs—it’s about places where food becomes a form of connection and creativity.

Port Cape May, located in in Port Marina, is an exciting and newer dining experience. Experience the outdoor deck with stunning views and the ocean breeze weaving through the air. The second level is an intimate and cozy atmosphere with floral aesthetics to match. Locally sourced ingredients from land and sea, not only nourishes our bodies but our souls with abundant local farms that we all know and love. Whether you’re dining solo at the bar (welcomed warmly, never made to feel awkward), enjoying a rare date night away from the kids, or sharing a bottle of wine with friends old or new.

For breakfast that feels like a gentle awakening rather than fuel for the hustle, visit Uncle Bill’s Pancake House—not the obvious tourist trap, but the smaller location where owner Bill Miller still makes everything from scratch. The blueberry pancakes use berries from local farms, and the coffee comes with unlimited refills and genuine conversation.

The hidden gem of Cape May’s dining scene might be the weekly dinners at the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows. These seasonal events combine exceptional farm-to-table cuisine with education about local ecosystems. Dining outdoors as the sun sets over protected wetlands, surrounded by the evening songs of native birds, provides perspective that no urban rooftop restaurant can match. https://www.capemay.com/play/south-cape-may-meadows/

For wine lovers, Willow Creek Winery offers tastings in a restored Victorian home where each room tells a different story through carefully curated vintages. Owner Gary Pavlis doesn’t just pour wine—he shares the stories of local grape growers, the challenges of coastal viticulture, and the surprising sophistication of New Jersey’s wine scene. The winery welcomes families during afternoon tastings, with grape juice tastings for children and spacious grounds where kids can play while adults savor the moment.

The Cape May State of Mind: Why Here, Why Now

Choosing Cape May isn’t about escaping your life—it’s about remembering what feeds your soul so you can return to your responsibilities renewed rather than depleted. In a culture that celebrates busy-ness as a virtue, Cape May offers permission to slow down without guilt, whether you’re a mom stealing a weekend away, a single woman treating herself to solo adventure, or a family seeking quality time together.

The town operates on what locals call “Cape May time”—a pace that honors both efficiency and contemplation. Restaurants don’t rush you through meals. Shop owners engage in actual conversations. Beach walks happen at the speed of thought rather than the speed of schedule.

Women from all walks of life often discover that Cape May’s greatest gift isn’t any single experience but rather the cumulative effect of being in a place where beauty isn’t an amenity but a baseline, where history isn’t a burden but a foundation, where nature isn’t a backdrop but a participant in daily life.

The Victorian houses teach persistence and attention to detail. The migrating whales demonstrate that long journeys can be both purposeful and graceful. The local business owners—many of them women who chose community over climbing corporate ladders—model alternative definitions of success. For families, Cape May offers the rare gift of a destination where multiple generations can find their own pace and interests while still enjoying shared experiences.

How Cape May Changes You

Women who spend intentional time in Cape May often describe a subtle but profound shift in perspective. The daily rhythm of sunrise beach walks and sunset porch conversations recalibrates your internal clock. The absence of skyscrapers lets your eyes remember how to focus on distant horizons. The sound of waves gradually replaces the mental soundtrack of daily obligations and notifications.

You’ll find yourself taking photos not for social media but for personal memory. You’ll engage in conversations with strangers without checking your phone. You’ll make decisions based on what sounds interesting rather than what seems most efficient. If you’re traveling with family, you’ll notice how your children become more present too, trading screens for seashells, digital games for beach discoveries.

This isn’t about becoming someone different—it’s about remembering who you were before you became so focused on managing everyone else’s needs or meeting endless expectations. Cape May doesn’t change ambitious women into passive vacationers, nor does it transform busy moms into carefree wanderers. Instead, it reminds driven women that ambition and peace aren’t mutually exclusive, that productivity and presence can coexist, and that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential.

Your Cape May Story Awaits

Cape May offers what every woman needs but rarely allows herself: time to think, space to breathe, and permission to prioritize joy alongside achievement. Whether you come for a solo weekend escape, a much-needed girls’ trip, a romantic getaway, or a multi-generational family adventure, you’ll leave with more than souvenirs and photographs.

You’ll carry with you the memory of Victorian women who built businesses and communities with grace and determination. You’ll remember the wisdom of whales who travel vast distances at their own pace. You’ll recall conversations with local artisans and entrepreneurs who chose fulfillment over mere success. If you traveled with family, you’ll treasure the moments when everyone paused to watch a sunset together, phones forgotten in beach bags.

Most importantly, you’ll return to your regular life with a secret: the knowledge that places like Cape May exist, where the rhythm of waves can slow your racing heart, where beauty isn’t a luxury but a necessity, and where being present isn’t selfish but essential. Whether you’re managing a career, raising children, caring for aging parents, or simply trying to carve out space for yourself in a demanding world, Cape May reminds you that you deserve moments of peace and beauty.

Cape May doesn’t promise to solve your daily challenges or eliminate your responsibilities. But it offers something perhaps more valuable: the reminder that you are more than your to-do list, that your worth isn’t measured only in what you accomplish for others, and that sometimes the most nurturing thing you can do—for yourself and those you love—is to slow down and simply be.

In a world that constantly demands more, Cape May whispers a different message: you are already enough, and you deserve beauty, peace, and joy not as rewards for productivity but as essential elements of a life well-lived.

Port: A Restaurant Worth Docking For

by TheSpot July 27, 2025

Port Cape May

Harbor Views and Summer Vibes

There’s something magical about dining by the water in Cape May, and Port Restaurant captures that coastal charm perfectly. Located at 954 Ocean Drive, this waterfront gem embodies everything we love about summer dining at the Jersey Shore.

Port’s expansive outdoor deck steals the show with breathtaking harbor views, where you can watch boats drift by while salt air mingles with the aroma of fresh seafood. Whether arriving by land or pulling up by boat, Port creates that perfect summer escape where time slows down and every sunset feels like a celebration.

The restaurant offers three distinct spaces: the casual outdoor deck with harbor views, a sleek downstairs bar, and an elegant upstairs dining room. We first enjoyed Aperol Spritzes while waiting for our table. The flow of low-fi house music weaving through the air gave us the impression of a European seaside destination. Each space captures a different summer mood, from spontaneous afternoon lunches to sophisticated evening dinners.

Farm-to-Table Meets Ocean-to-Table

What sets Port apart is their commitment to truly local ingredients. The menu features beef from their own cattle in Woodstown, wild-caught sea bass from their own fishing boats off Cape May’s coast, and seasonal produce from their local farm. This complete circle of local sourcing connects you directly to South Jersey’s land and sea. My dinner of red snapper and local farm vegetables illustrated our fresh fare of the Atlantic.

The outdoor deck menu embraces fresh, light coastal flavors perfect for lazy summer afternoons – think vibrant seafood preparations, fresh sushi, and dishes that capture seaside dining’s essence. The indoor menu offers refined, shareable plates crafted with the finest local ingredients.

The Perfect Summer Rhythm

Port represents Cape May dining’s evolution – honoring maritime heritage while embracing modern culinary excellence. This summer, for that perfect Cape May experience where exceptional food meets stunning views, Port delivers on all counts.

Port Cape May: 954 Ocean Drive. Deck seating first-come, first-served. Indoor reservations recommended via OpenTable.

Between work demands and juggling life’s endless to-do l\ists, we often miss out on the magic happening right in our backyard. That’s exactly how I felt when I finally discovered the Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival – and honestly, I’m kicking myself for waiting so long.

A Magical Escape for Families and Friend Groups Alike

One detail that particularly impressed me was watching the artisans at work. It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to show kids the value of craftsmanship, and for friend groups to find unique keepsakes together. The handmade lanterns, souvenirs, and beaded gifts aren’t just trinkets – they’re beautiful reminders of a special evening and perfect gifts for loved ones back home.

Dining Options for Every Group and Taste

Because everyone gets hungry during a fun evening out, the festival offers something for every palate and group dynamic. Whether your family is craving Chickie and Pete’s famous crab fries, your friend group wants to share fresh sushi from Oishii, or everyone’s excited to try dumplings from Humpty’s, there’s something to satisfy every appetite. Remember when zoos were just a quick stop with the kids to see a tired lion behind glass? Those days are officially over! The Philadelphia Zoo, with the unique distinction of being America’s first zoo, has transformed into an absolute must-visit destination that’ll make you forget you’re even in the city. Whether you’re planning a date, family outing, or just need to escape the daily grind, this place has something magical waiting for you.

Meet the Golden Girls: The Cutest Celebrity Quartet You’ve Never Heard Of

Move over Hollywood – Philadelphia has its own Golden Girls, and they’re absolutely adorable! Dorothy, Sophia, Rose, and Blanche aren’t retirement home residents; they’re the newest superstars at the Philadelphia Zoo. These four Western Santa Cruz Galápagos tortoise hatchlings were born to century-old parents Mommy and Abrazzo, making Mommy the oldest first-time mother of her species. Talk about defying expectations!

You can visit these tiny celebrities inside the Reptile and Amphibian building, where they’re busy being impossibly cute and totally Instagram-worthy. Fair warning: you might spend way more time here than planned just watching these little legends explore their habitat.

Zootopiaries: Where Art Meets Nature in the Most Spectacular Way

Picture this: life-sized animal sculptures made entirely of living plants and flowers scattered throughout the zoo grounds. The Philadelphia Zoo partnered with the Philadelphia Horticultural Society to create these breathtaking botanical masterpieces that’ll have your camera working overtime.

Zootopiaries

Each sculpture tells a story while providing the perfect backdrop for those special photos you’ll actually want to share. These magnificent creatures love snacking on leaves and herbs, and they’re surprisingly gentle when taking treats from your hand. by TheSpot January 30, 2025
written by TheSpot
Rosa Agliata, My Italian Lifestyle

Discover My Italian Lifestyle with Rosa Agliata: A Journey of Fashion, Culture, and Empowerment

Rosa Agliata, hailing from the enchanting city of Naples, Italy, exudes a vivacious spirit and an infectious smile that immediately captivates those around her. Her magnetic personality and love for all things Italian led her to create a brand that embodies her passions—My Italian Lifestyle. While the name might give you a glimpse into what this company is about, there’s so much more to uncover once you get to know Rosa and the world she’s crafted.

At its core, My Italian Lifestyle is a celebration of Italian culture, fashion, and travel—all delivered with the unmistakable flair of Italy. Rosa, a designer, stylist, and professional organizer, helps women transform their wardrobes and embrace their authentic style, ensuring that they look and feel their best. But her journey to creating this unique brand wasn’t always straightforward.

From Childhood Passion to Entrepreneurial Success

Rosa’s love for fashion and organization took root during her childhood. She fondly remembers picking out ties for her father and helping her mother choose the perfect outerwear for daily wear. This early connection to fashion laid the groundwork for her future career.

As an adult, Rosa’s expertise was recognized when she was hired by the Region of Campania to oversee various fashion, home goods, and jewelry events in New York City. This opportunity allowed Rosa to dive deep into the American market and broaden her understanding of fashion on a global scale. It also set the stage for her to create My Italian Lifestyle—a brand that blends Italian artistry with the world’s best styles.

Her passion for artisans and hand-crafted goods became the backbone of her venture. Rosa firmly believes that while creating a business may not always be easy, persistence and determination can bring any dream to life. She proudly refers to herself as an ambassador of the authentic Italian lifestyle and is dedicated to sharing every facet of it—from quality fashion to Mediterranean-inspired experiences.

Redefining Style and Empowerment

Rosa’s work goes beyond simply curating beautiful outfits. As a fashion expert, she speaks at corporate events, universities, and other platforms, teaching women how fashion can empower them and enhance their self-confidence. She knows that clothes are not just about aesthetics—they’re a reflection of personal identity.

One of Rosa’s most unique offerings is her Italian shopping trips—intimate, hand-crafted excursions to Italy designed to provide a 360-degree experience of the Italian lifestyle. From shopping in hidden boutiques that locals frequent to dining in private homes with personal chefs, Rosa curates every detail to ensure that her clients not only leave with fabulous wardrobes but unforgettable memories. These trips are limited to small groups of 8 to 10, creating a sense of intimacy and personalized attention.

Her philosophy centers on the concept of quality over quantity. Whether she’s helping clients select pieces for their wardrobe or guiding them to rediscover the gems they already own, Rosa is a master at helping women uncover their personal style. She views her work as a tool to help clients breathe new life into their wardrobes while empowering them to feel confident and authentic.

Her approach to styling is warm and non-judgmental. She refers to her closet consultations as a “no-judgment zone,” where the goal is to create an environment of trust and openness. Rosa believes that her talent lies in helping women reconnect with their true selves, allowing them to express their individuality through fashion and, ultimately, gain the confidence to show up in the world as their authentic selves.

Redefining Success on Her Own Terms

For Rosa, success is not measured by external standards, but by the value of her time and the quality of her relationships. She works at her own pace, always prioritizing her family—especially her young daughter—while continuing to build her brand. For Rosa, the true essence of success is being able to balance work and personal life while doing what she loves.

As we navigate a world increasingly dominated by technology, many wonder about the future of personal stylists. Rosa, however, remains optimistic about the power of the human touch. While technology can provide valuable tools, she believes that the human eye and the expertise of a personal stylist will always have an edge when it comes to providing a truly authentic and tailored experience.

For Rosa, creativity, authenticity, and imagination will never go out of style. It’s these timeless qualities that drive her passion and allow her to help others embrace their own La Dolce Vita—the sweet life.

EASY FAMILY HOLIDAY BAKING RECIPES TO START A NEW TRADITION

by TheSpot December 14, 2024
written by TheSpot
Cookie

By Ella Colarossi

There’s no better scent during the holiday season than the smell of fresh-baked cookies wafting
through the air when you come home. My family takes it a step further, baking enough cookies
to feed a small army. My name is Ella Colarossi, and one of my favorite holiday traditions is our
family’s cookie-baking marathon. Each year, we make over 15 different types of cookies, from
cherished family recipes to new finds that quickly become traditions of their own. This isn’t just a
baking session—it’s a full family affair that has been a part of my life for as long as I can
remember.
The main bakers are my mom, grandma, two sisters, and me. My dad and brother are the
official taste testers, though we don’t trust them with the baking (they’d probably burn the
cookies if we let them try!). We crank up the Christmas carols and bake all day long. But cookie
baking isn’t just a one-day event for us—it’s a season-long tradition that begins in
mid-November and stretches all the way through to Christmas Eve. We even have a second
freezer dedicated solely to cookie storage.
This tradition was started by my dad’s mother, my Nana. She was the best baker I knew, always
with an endless supply of cookies when we visited her. Though she has passed, her
cookie-baking legacy lives on. We use her recipes every year. We give cookies as gifts, creating
homemade plates for friends and family. While everyone has their favorites, the most requested
are our molasses cookies, ooey gooey cookies, and lemon cookies. Some of these recipes are
family secrets, passed down through generations, while others have been collected over the
years from various sources. But no matter where they come from, they’ve all become an integral
part of our family tradition.

“Lemony Slice-and-Bakes”
Makes: About 50 Cookies
2 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour
1⁄2 tsp. kosher salt

Our Small Business Feature That Makes Gift Giving Joyful!

by TheSpot November 30, 2024
written by TheSpot
Small Business Saturday

The autumn season is well underway and it’s a time of transition in many ways.  The leaves turn colors, preparing for end of year finances, budgeting for the holidays, and overall reflecting on our past and future goals.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday campaigns descend in blitz mode especially here in the U.S. almost as a nature calling of the impending holiday season.  Small Business Saturday has carved out its own little niche as a gentle reminder that sometimes less is more.  More and more, we are recognizing the importance of shopping small as a show of support but also adding meaning to well intentioned thought and effort of gift giving.  What do we mean by that?  Well connecting is part of the human experience.  Connecting with our neighbors, our community, and family makes us feel good, right?  At least it’s supposed to.  When we practice uplifting the important people in our lives, we uplift ourselves.

The past few years, The Spot Magazine has met many business owners that are creating livelihoods to provide everyday experiences.  By creating experiences, they are creating joy not only for themselves but for others.  That’s why we put together a list of small business owners who are creating this type of joy that is unique and special.  More importantly, they are part of our beloved community working hard to bring all of those qualities to you.

Field and Flock Lavender Farm

We visited Field and Flock Lavender Farm in Woodstown, NJ and we instantly fell in love with the farm.  Lavender season is on full display during the months of July and August but owners, George and Kimberly, work year round providing high quality lavender products.  Products are sold right in their farm location but it is a worthwhile experience to pick up hand crafted gifts surely delighting recipients…or yourself for that matter.  My personal favorites are the luxurious body cream and cocoa powder! https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=field+and+flock

Care Package Bakes

Care Package Bakes was founded by home baker, Elisa Ludwig.  We visited her home and received a warm welcome.  An author and writer, Elisa created a unique concept by transforming her passion for baking into a small batch baking business.  Her assorted baked treats are the perfect bite size melt in your mouth bits of heaven.  What is especially unique is that Elisa incorporates seasonal ingredients and combinations of flavors that compliment the season or simply create something entirely new.  No matter what you choose out of the box, your senses will surely thank you. https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=care+package

Morning Glori Farmette

The Spot Magazine visited the farm and we met Angela who shared a little of her story on how she and husband Brian, began the farm.  She now has a growing brood and the farm enjoys many activities and events for kids and adults alike.  Why not sponsor an alpaca?  Cuties like Willow, Hershey, and Maribelle will steal your heart but you’ll never be too far away.  You can find so many personalized gifts in stuffed animals, mittens, scarves, hats and so much more.  Items made from  the very best alpaca wool are sustainable and support not only the farm but the surrounding community.  A must add on your checklist! https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=morning+gl

Multi Media Audio

We met and spoke to Megan Negron Dalton, co-owner, of audio engineering company, Multi Media Audio.  We loved featuring Megan and how she is breaking barriers in the audio space.  Why this would make this a great gift?  One of the features of Multi Media Audio,in addition to providing audio engineering services for music and film, is that they are heavily involved in all forms of audio content.  Want to start a podcast?  Megan has you covered.  Do you want to uplevel your content creation?  Multi Media Audio can certainly help you out with that.  If we have a loved one who is trying to break in the biz, sometimes a little extra help can go a long way.  A session or consultation is a great gift for helping a loved one get one step closer to realizing their dreams.  https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=multi+media

Adore Redecor

Jennifer Armstrong has a passion for upcycling antique furniture.  So much so that when she left the corporate world, Jennifer turned her hobby into a local enterprise.  You can find Jennifer on Instagram under Adore Redecor.  What we love about Jennifer is that she offers a unique service in refinishing and upcycling quality furniture, but offers an array of inside knowledge and tips on antique shopping and DIY projects.  All you have to do is look around and rather than throwing out good quality furniture or dinnerware passed down from previous generations, give those prized possessions new life.  Jennifer can help you do that or give valuable insight about vintage shopping for one of a kind gifts that have history and a story to tell.  https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=adore+redecor

Botanically Blurred

Have you ever thought of having your own house or commercial plant stylist?  We found one in Alexa Fornicola.  Alexa is founder of Botanically Blurred, a commercial and residential plant design and maintenance company.  Alexa’s super power is taking in several factors such as your space, lifestyle, and personality to combine these ingredients and voilá!  Sounds simple but Alexa has a gift in curating your space into an oasis that is an extension of you.  You and your own unique beautiful self.  Looking for a sentimental housewarming gift?  Give the gift of plants and an actual designer to come with it!  https://thespotmagazine.com/?s=botanically+blurred

Regardless of how and where you shop, if you take a moment and see all the wonderful small businesses around you, there is nothing like picking up a gift that gives a sense of comfort, warmth, friendship, or love like giving something that is unique, memorable, and a story that is uniquely and lovable you.

The Guild House Hotel: A Luxury Boutique Hotel

by TheSpot October 23, 2024
written by TheSpot
Guild House Hotel

Two questions often presented to me are should we see the Liberty Bell and where to find the best cheesesteaks.  I always answer yes to the first and I usually share my personal favorites with the second.  Where to stay however can require some thought.  Visitors and locals often do not associate the City of Brotherly Love with significant roles of historical influential women.  The Spot recently visited The Guild House Hotel, a luxurious boutique property centered in the heart of Philadelphia. One of the distinctive features of the property is that it was once home to the New Century Guild and has since evolved into contemporary elegance.

Located at 13th and Locust Streets, we were greeted by Alex, the Director of Hotel Operations, at our arrival. She guided us throughout the property and shared its history. The establishment is a National Historic Landmark and was once a private home to the New Century Guild during the 19th century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Century_Guild

Alex passionately detailed the Guild’s background and introduced us to its founder, Eliza Sproat Turner, a suffragette, abolitionist, and author. This residence served as a gathering place for women, allowing them to meet in public without needing permission from their husbands. Even after living in the city my entire life, I was captivated by the stories of these remarkable women and their achievements.

One of the more enjoyable aspects of the hotel is The Lounge, where members of the Guild would gather to discuss ideas, read, or enjoy tea and coffee. This unique hotel reveals the untold stories of these women. While I looked around, I was reminded of the HBO show The Gilded Age, which portrays women asserting themselves and sharing new ideas. The decor creates a welcoming atmosphere filled with books, vintage phones, typewriters, and comfortable furniture. There is an instant vibe that inspires conversation, activism, and expression.  It’s readily apparent, The Lounge is just as an important focal point today as it was in the early days.

Guild House Hotel

The hotel resembles a residential row home and underwent a three-year renovation by ROHE Creative, a woman-owned interior design firm based in Philadelphia. https://www.rohecreative.com. Each of the twelve rooms is named after a member of the New Century Guild, featuring elegant and refined decor fostering emotional connections and positive memories. This setup also serves to educate visitors about the lasting influence of these women.

We found The Guild Hotel charming and delightful.  Conveniently situated near popular attractions like The Reading Terminal Market, Independence Mall, and Rittenhouse Square, the hotel is easily accessible for tourists and locals alike.  Philly is a walkable city therefore any of these main attractions are reachable in minutes.  Additionally, Philadelphia is bike friendly.  Bike lanes are increasingly part of the transportation outlook and safe for recreation and family-friendly activities.

A visit to the Guild House Hotel is valuable for anyone, making it an ideal location for special events, overnight stays, or cityscapes. The real fun is exploring all the diverse cafes and restaurants from around the globe nearby. Lastly, as we walk through the hallways of the hotel and look around at the names of the members, it serves as a gentle reminder to immerse ourselves in the present moment. You can learn about planning your perfect cityscape here http://guildhousehotel.com.

Meet The Local Artist Inspiring Connection in the Community

by TheSpot October 7, 2024

Vine Designs Art

Many of us possess cherished mementos, particularly those related to our children and pets. In the current digital age, we accumulate tens of thousands of photographs on our devices, yet we seldom revisit them. As we scroll through our electronic galleries, we may pause to appreciate one or two of our favorite images. However, aside from downloading these photos, what meaningful actions do we take? We tend to retain them until they eventually transition to the cloud. Imagine if we introduced you to a local artist who specializes in creating paintings of your beloved pets or capturing scenes and landscapes that hold special significance for you. Meet Ivy Egger, the local artist inspiring connection in the community.

Local Artist
Pet Portrait

Ivy Egger, an artist based in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, specializes in glass art and operates her own studio, Vine Designs Art. Although Ivy has quite a few specialties in the world of art, nature serves as her primary source of inspiration. Additionally, Ivy fulfills special requests, which have proven to be one of her most fulfilling skills. Among her most sought-after commissions are artistic representations of clients’ pets.  When inquired about her journey as an artist, Ivy shared that her fascination with art began in her childhood. She nurtured this interest by enrolling in art classes during high school and subsequently majoring in art in college.

Ivy took a hiatus from her artistic career following the birth of her son. However, during the pandemic, she reignited her passion for art by enrolling in a mosaic class. She noted that despite her extensive experience as an artist, this was her first encounter with this specific craft.  As Ivy delved into this new medium, her creativity began to flourish in various directions. For instance, she started designing jewelry that incorporates mosaic elements made from resin. When we inquired how nature specifically serves as an inspiration for her artwork, Ivy shared that she is particularly moved by the beauty of flowers and waterfalls during her creative process. Among these, she identified sunflowers as her favorite subject, explaining that their tall stature and vibrant colors resonate deeply with her.

Art is inherently subjective in numerous respects. We sought to understand the type of satisfaction Ivy derives when a client receives their commissioned artwork. Ivy asserts that there is no greater appreciation than witnessing the expression in a client’s eyes. She ensures that her clients are informed about the progress of their pieces; however, the moment they view her work in person elicits an indescribable reaction that fills Ivy with immense pride.

Local Artist Ivy Egger At Work

Ivy took part in a prominent art exhibition known as the Chester County Tour, which occurs annually in May.  She was fortunate to be involved for two consecutive years. Between her studio and exhibit shows, Ivy is more active than ever before.  In fact, she was recently profiled on 6ABC about her work and life.  https://6abc.com/post/mosaic-artist-perseveres-challenges-art-showcases-work-swarthmore-borough-hall/15232817/

The life of an artist can be rewarding and challenging at the same time.  Ivy has had to navigate through a few in her own life. Despite any obstacles, we were curious to inquire that if she were to give advice to upcoming creatives, what would that be? Ivy emphasized the importance of selecting a medium that allows for skill development, stating that “marketing is everything.” Now that’s advice that we can all abide by.  More information can be found here www.vinedesignsart.com.
