Unforgettable Fun Awaits: Experience Urban Air Adventure Park

by TheSpot December 8, 2023
written by TheSpot

Urban Air Adventure Park is not only an adventure but a playground utopia. A place of unforgettable fun that cannot only be imagined but experienced. Okay now that we got that out of the way, let’s answer the question: what is Urban Air Adventure Park? Well we may not have the complete definition but it’s as close to an indoor kids’ paradise as you can get. This franchise concept evolved fairly recently and after visiting the Sicklerville location, it is easy to see why it is poised for success.

Owners Rocco and Mahesh, were warm and welcoming. In existence for 3 years, this franchise is an impressive building consisting of a myriad of activities. As soon as we entered the premises, a birthday party was taking place. The establishment is bright, expansive, and multi-colored. I couldn’t help but notice that the grounds are strategically set up to meet the wonder and amazement of an adventure seeker. Imagination here is limitless. Platforms like Leap of Faith, Trapeze, and Wipeout are a few of the adventures in the park where kids propel their limitations. The Warrior Course is an obstacle course that tests your stamina and abilities. Can you hang on and catch the next hanging ring? It only remains to be seen. Just try climbing, crawling, jumping, and hanging without falling into the pit.

Virtual Reality is an immersive experience suitable for gamers or novices. The all ages experience allows you to fight off virtual dragons and robots in this alternate universe. If you’re looking for something a bit tamer, other games like Drop Zone are some options for some relaxed fun.

What is an adventure park without concession stands? They have that figured out too. An in house cafe serves all your favorite food delights. Kids’ preferences like pizza, chicken wings, and fries plus ICEE water ice can all be found at the cafe.  Memberships are available in several tiers that outline the best package for your family. The incentives and features included in annual memberships alone are worth the low monthly cost. Another sweet deal is that you can attend as many times as you wish throughout the month. Gift cards and tickets are also available for purchase. Urban Air Adventure Park is an impressive outlet that is educational, builds up confidence, and camaraderie. Ultimately, it is a place to create special memories. Don’t think of this as a kid party only destination. Mahesh explained that it is a popular choice for school events, team building, and camp. In addition, quite a few school fundraisers are held here.

What makes Urban Air Adventure Park unique and special? We live in a time of advancing technological inventions and it’s easy to spend hours with our electronic devices. Urban Air Adventure Park is a healthy and fun alternative to explore, exercise, and participate in group activities. It doesn’t have to be all about the kids. Entire families can reconnect in a way that brings out our inner 8 year old. I can say with just a slight bit of regret, that I only wish Urban Air Adventure Park existed for my 8 year old self.

Urban Air Adventure Park in Sicklerville is located in South Jersey and accessible in all major routes in the Greater Philadelphia region. For more information and questions about any of the activities mentioned in this article, visit http://urbanair.com.

Promising Young Star Show His Human Side in TV Series

by TheSpot November 27, 2023
written by TheSpot

In the second installment of our series, we have the pleasure of interviewing a vibrant and talented performer. Maro Dēlo possesses a remarkable level of wisdom that surpasses his age. As an actor, musician, and model, this young individual appears to possess an abundance of gifts. By simply observing his work on his social media platforms and admiring his youthful charm, one might assume that Maro is bound for stardom. However, upon meeting Maro, we encountered a self-assured yet compassionate young man who triumphed over his insecurities to forge a path that was not necessarily straightforward.

We were curious how Maro found himself in a strong creative field at such a young age. Juggling music, acting, and modeling can be daunting for the most seasoned professional. We asked if he experienced a lightbulb moment.  According to Maro, there were several moments.  Maro possessed a passion and natural ability for music.  A family member introduced him to music producers at a networking event just a few years ago, which sparked the idea to pursue music as a career.   At the age of 18, he decided that he would pursue this path professionally.

Acting and modeling came along but as Maro explains, he was not keen on the idea.  After teaming up with an acting coach who offered the right tools and support, Maro gradually embraced other opportunities.  In our conversation, Maro divulged that he was bullied as a child.  He took that humiliation and turned it into a positive by expressing power and control while on stage.

Maro portrays Jett, a bar back with dreams of becoming a musician, in Joey’s Place. To what extent does Maro resemble his character? Maro shares his personal encounters in the food service industry and his own journey in the music world. He draws a parallel to Matt LeBlanc’s portrayal of Joey in Friends, highlighting how LeBlanc, as a struggling actor, played a struggling actor in the show. However, Maro asserts that while he can put “parts of himself through the door” he ultimately follows the director and producers’ vision.

Childhood trauma is a concurring theme in Joey’s Place.  Jett, will have his own set of challenges with a father who belittles him.  Maro is eager to tap into his own emotions to bring dimension to Jett.  Maro is not afraid of demonstrating his emotions.  In fact, he wants to show that it’s okay for men to show their vulnerable side.  He believes that if we can continue changing perceptions about what is considered feminine and masculine emotions, we could help end bullying.

There is no doubt Maro Dēlo has a bright future ahead.  Opportunities for young talent to play multi-faceted characters not only enhances a story but gives audiences a chance to explore real life challenges in depth.  Philadelphia is rapidly becoming a creative hub in the world of entertainment.   We are a place of treasures that only continues to add to our rich tapestry of stories.  You can support production of the pilot  episode of Joey’s Place by clicking on the link.  https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/unveiling-the-world-of-joey-s-place#/

MEET TWO TV CREATORS WHO ARE BRINGING PHILLY TO LIFE ON SCREEN

by TheSpot November 25, 2023
written by TheSpot

Terry McFadden and Steve Sacavitch are two TV creators on a mission to bring Philly to life on the screen.  We sat down with Terry and Steve to find out more about their pilot, Joey’s Place, and themes of childhood trauma relevant to the show.  We also explore how Philadelphia serves as a major influence to their story and the answers just may surprise you.

Terry and Steve met through mutual acting friends and formed a long-standing friendship.  Both are active in acting, writing, music, and from the Philly area.  They described their early days of their careers as pounding the pavements and knocking on doors in New York City.   More often than not, those doors shut on them.  Terry lived in Los Angeles for 25 years where he honed his talent as a writer.  Steve, a Philly resident, cites South Philly as his inspiration for all of his creative work.

As Terry explains Steve brought him a script and rather than set out to film the entire 114 pages, Instead, they filmed 10 pages of what they call in the industry proof of concept.  It’s a Hollywood story in itself with a shoestring budget, shooting at the Palizzi Social Club in South Philadelphia, and had to be out before dinner time.  Terry recounts the pasta cooks bringing in their equipment as they were wrapping up.  Steve submitted the product on a whim.  To their pleasant surprise, the creative duo won five awards including Award of Excellence from One-Reeler Short Film Competition 2023.

So, what inspired Terry and Steve to create a story about a local crime boss, Joey, who has to confront his “inner child”?  That inner child comes in the form of young actor Hudson Chance.   As Steve explains, real life experiences and the bar/restaurant where the show takes place, make it ideal to tell a story of various characters and personality conflicts.  Joey often experiences conflicting emotions because of his outward persona and shadow self.  Who was Joey as a boy?  What were his real dreams?  What are the circumstances in the human composition that leads Joey awry?

Terry firmly asserts that the show doesn’t explicitly state the effects of trauma, but rather portrays them through the characters’’ actions and behavior.  He further adds that the other characters will also confront their inner demons.  For instance, Joey’s wife in the series grapples with an absentee mother, while Jett, a bar back and aspiring musician, will face challenges of an unsympathetic father who belittles him.

One surprising aspect of the show is that it does not include blood, violence, or swearing although they jokingly add there will be yelling and screaming.  Steve emphasizes that the restaurant itself is a character.  We get a glimpse of their lives through the “eyes” of the restaurant.  Moreover, Terry highlights shows like Cheers where the audience rarely saw characters’ lives outside of the bar.  Terry draws the comparison of how the audience will “see” their actions.

What makes South Philly such a creative force of nature for Steve?  His response was comfort.  Intrigued, we inquired further.  He goes on to say that living in Philadelphia, especially in South Philadelphia, there is a strong sense of comfort and support that makes it difficult to venture far from home.  On the other hand, Terry had returned to the Lansdale area.  Taking note of upcoming areas like Fishtown, Terry saw first-hand a new level of vibrancy to the city.  Curious about their favorite local spots in town, we asked what would be their ideal choices for date night?  Terry and Steve’s answers surely reflected their influences.  Steve suggests Sinatra Night at Stogie Joe’s Tavern and or Le Virtú to impress.  Terry, being a musician, still enjoys live local music at wellestablished locales like the Khyber Pass.  And favorite historical spots?  The Rocky Statue.

Regardless of the direction this artistic collaboration leads them, Philadelphia remains as the backdrop of the story.  Joey’s Place explores the city’s dynamic neighborhoods, diverse cultures, and fascinating real-life characters, elevating the art of storytelling.   The series embodies relatability, accountability, and stability.  It is a Philadelphia narrative crafted by talented individuals who possess an intimate understanding of both the city and its residents, and who are determined to do it their way.  Show your support for Joey’s Place by clicking here https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/unveiling-the-world-of-joey-s-place#/.

Shop Vintage Like a Pro- A Beginner’s Guide from an Expert

by TheSpot November 25, 2023
written by TheSpot

Recently, my sister and I went on a little afternoon shopping trip to look at some antique furniture.  They were high end and in good condition.  This planted a thought in my head about quality and the meaning of our purchases.  As it turns out,  my sister recently had her own furniture refurbished by restoration and vintage upcycle expert, Jennifer Armstrong. Jen worked in a corporate setting for a number of years and decided to turn her talents to her passion.  Jen now has her own restoration business, Adore Redecor. She shares some valuable insights and tips on shopping for antiques even if you don’t know the first thing about it.

The very idea of shopping for antiques can be very daunting.  For those who have experienced an overwhelming feeling and not knowing what to buy, Jennifer is here to help.  First, just how did Jennifer manage to leave the corporate world and turn her passion for antiques into a full time gig?  Jennifer tells us that initially she found herself moving furniture and pieces around then began buying additional pieces.  More ideas came from Pinterest, how to’s on YouTube and Instagram videos, and slowly began restoring her own furniture.  Today, she has a loyal list of clients and is committed to the benefits of vintage shopping and renovation.

In our conversation with Jen, we gained new perspectives on the very idea of refurbishing and breathing new life into quality pieces.  Consequently, landfills are becoming increasingly congested with this massive amount of waste. Research indicates that younger homeowners and renters prioritize cost effectiveness over other factors, owing to the soaring prices of homes and the need for affordability.

We asked Jen what resources were out there to help someone get started.  Jen undoubtedly believes Facebook Market is a good place to start.  She gives much credit to the idea of getting inspiration and a good place to find quality pieces.  Additionally, there is usually someone close by where pick up and delivery can facilitate purchases.  Also Jen believes Pinterest and Instagram are huge resources for ideas, education, and discovering sale items.

So what are some of Jen’s simple but helpful tips when vintage shopping?

  1. Inspect!  Jen emphasizes that inspection is key.  Look for dates, check edges and joints.  Usually dovetail joints indicate a well made piece.
  2. Open and close drawers.  Check the working condition
  3. Bring a cloth and clean under the base of furniture for dust and any creepy crawlies.
  4. If a piece is on sale as antique but not solid, it is okay to walk away from the sale
  5. If a seller does not show a lot of photos, just ask.  Zoom in on online photos
  6. If there are scratches on pieces, not to worry, usually a simple stain pen will work.  Bear in mind though, scratches add character and timelessness!
  7. Not everything has to match. Mix and match patterns, colors, and sizes can be perceived as fashionable and artistic not mention make your home pop.
  8. Simple facts to know before you go: to be considered antique, an item must be at least 100 years old and vintage items are at least 20 plus years.

Jen suggests looking at major outlets for inspiration however advises caution on purchases. Oftentimes, there are hidden features such as thin wood or veneer.  Exploring pre-owned or refurbished home decor or furniture can actually be a pleasant and therapeutic activity. There is a certain charm in revitalizing an item, not to mention the significant savings of hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Jen exemplifies how something we perceive as old can be rejuvenated once more..  Selecting antiques for our homes and living spaces is a chance to rewrite your own personal history for generations to come.   Vintage items not only make great gifts but create lasting memories especially during the shopping season. Follow Jen Armstrong at Adore Redecor https://linktr.ee/adoreredecor to book an appointment or for more expert tips!

Flavorful Finds: How DiBruno Bros. in Wayne, Pa. is Redefining Specialty Foods

by TheSpot November 18, 2023
written by TheSpot

As we scroll through social media, how many of us stop and go through all the photos of that friend who is away in Europe or some far off land?  We’re studying the backgrounds, what they’re eating, and who they’re with.  If we’re not on vacation but dining somewhere special, how many of us are guilty of taking photos of our dishes and posting them?  Guilty.  It almost seems so normal that we no longer question why.  We believe the answer is that we are living in the moment and want to share our moment.

We visited Di Bruno Bros. Wayne and if we’re betting on a dining experience that is ethereal, we’re holding the winning hand on Bar Alimentari.  The Italian word alimentari simply means food.  The simplicity of the word alludes to its’ elegance.  The display of curated wine, charcuterie, and gourmet cheeses demonstrates only a portal of what Bar Alimentari has to offer and how they’re redefining specialty foods.

Upon entering the establishment, you’re immediately transported to a Parisian cafe.  An arch wrapped with a garland of lemons and twinkling lights brings to life a Midsummer Night’s Dream.  Small tables and wicker chairs sketch a picture of good conversation and great wine.  Yet, there is beginning to the journey.  Their famous cheeses are on display with a cheese professional ready to greet you with their expertise.  Almost immediately approaching the cheese counter, Evan greeted us with samples of cheese as he explained the textures and flavors.  Jason Asher, Director of Di Bruno Bros. Wayne and Ardmore, took us on a tour of the Wayne location to show us all it has to offer.  He explained that cheesemongers receive continuing education on the most up to date cheeses and source the best of the best.

DI BRUNO BROS. SPECIALTY FOODS

One of the standout features is their gift basket station.  They have the option to either create your own personalized package with the help of a sales associate or order specialty gift baskets online.  A genius amenity that does away with the stress of gift giving.

What you may not know is that Di Bruno Bros. offers their own label wine which the Di Bruno Bros. team actually collaborates with winemakers to develop unique brands.  Erica Field, Social Media Manager and Graphic Designer, added that they went as far as crushing the grapes to get the all around experience of winemaking.  Their wines are either sold separately or can also be paired with other various items for events or special occasions at their establishments.  For the coffee lovers, they’ve partnered with artisan coffee roaster, Caffe Umbria, which serves up a truly unique Italian coffee experience.  Popular opinion says that coffee and wine make great gift basket accessories for the holidays!

The wine section is as large and impressive as any wine and spirit chain if not moreso.  Jason explained to us that great care is taken on selecting wines that are not sold elsewhere.  The idea is exclusivity.  At Bar Alimentari, don’t be deceived by the modest decor.  It is a full service restaurant.  The atmosphere is meant to be relaxed and lively with great food and conversation. Full sections such as Arrosto, Pane Dolce, and Chef’s Counter  are dedicated stations serving the highest quality meats, roast, prepared dishes, and  sweet delicacies.  The patron is participating in a culinary adventure.

Foccaceria (pronounced Fo-katcha-reeha), is a new sandwich station now serving large made-to-order sandwiches using their famed artisanal meats and cheeses we have all come to love.  You must top off any meal with dessert.  Di Bruno Bros. is one of the few select establishments that carry Venchi Fine Chocolates from Turin, Italy and Philadelphia staple Isgro Pastries.  Are you looking for a nutritious meal that can be quickly prepared during your busy days or nights? Consider trying out their cast iron pizza program or try Di Bruno Bros. to go meals, which are designed to cater to the needs of busy parents and individuals with hectic schedules. These meals can be easily heated up and enjoyed at any time, providing you with a wholesome and satisfying dining experience.

Di Bruno Bros. Philadelphia is a valued and trusted name where generations of families filled their tables with highest quality cheese and charcuterie.  Di Bruno Bros.Wayne is not just an eatery or dining establishment.  Today, it is a gathering place to replenish your senses and signal “unwind.”  It is where we connect with conversation, delectable bites, and chill wines.

Di Bruno Bros. brings trusted old world traditions to the new world of taste.  Lastly, the outdoor patio is a congenial option on warm days and early evenings.

It’s time to uncover Di Bruno Bros. Wayne, PA.  It is our choice to catch up with a friend, shop in nearby plazas, or unwind after the work day. Charm, elegance, and taste are qualities that are tried and true and never go out of style.   Visit their location at 385 West Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, PA 19087.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, PHILLY!

by TheSpot November 2, 2023
written by TheSpot

South Philly has been location to many iconic films and in some cases background settings for film and television. Hollywood movie stars walked along the small streets, dined at local restaurants, and occasionally popped up at a sports game or two. Local residents know that South Philly provides a rich tapestry of real life characters, family histories, and workplace comedy. Often times, the locals may remark that someone should make a tv show. Well creators, Steven Sacavitch and Terry McFadden have done just that.

Joey’s Place is a half hour dramedy that scoops in all of those loveable traits in a mixing bowl. It is a story of an eclectic group of employees, family members, and sinister forces. Throw in the added ingredient that Joey is a crime boss who conducts his business in his local eatery, well we have to say… it’s a recipe for disaster. Steven Sacavitch and Terry McFadden are award winning filmmakers and actors that bring to life these characters in a real and authentic way. The concept of Joey’s Place is to bring forth all of the complex ties of human relationships together with comedy and emotion. The idea is to explore past traumas that affect our daily adult lives. The additional cast members: Frank Volpe, Kristen Minter, Maro Delo, and Hudson Chance play central characters in the story that bring their chemistry to the chaos. Each are professional actors with various film and television performances under their belts.

The production team currently is focusing on making the pilot episode a reality through Indie GoGo. The campaign is looking for backing and support to create the best possible visually and technically appealing pilot with the hopes of being picked up. Philadelphia is a special place for story telling. We bring warmth and neighborly affection in our every day lives. We are enriched culturally and personally when we continue to bring our stories alive in our way. For information on how you can support the production of Joey’s Place, click on the link below. Let’s keep the camera rolling!

Philadelphia to Ireland: A Cultural Journey

by TheSpot October 15, 2023
written by TheSpot

My recent visit to Ireland gave me the opportunity to understand history and how the sacrifices and journeys of anyone leaving their home countries to seek a better life in North America.  How do these experiences influence the tapestry of Greater Philadelphia?  It seems there are many.

This was not always the case.  The most notable event in Ireland’s history is the famine of the mid 1800s.  This led to the Irish Diaspora.  Millions had to leave for the Americas and parts of the West Indies due to starvation and poverty.  A large majority have settled in the east coast of the United States.

Upon my visit in Ireland, we visited the cities of Dublin, Killarney, and Galway.  The cities and countryside demonstrate unique characteristics.  Dublin, cosmopolitan and commercial, mixing high tech and retaining its cultural identity.  Dublin is a commercial and diverse European city.  Ireland offers a 12.5% corporate tax incentive which consequently attracts major corporations to plant their European headquarters in Ireland.  Companies such as Citi, Hub Spot, and Apple have taken advantage of this tax incentive.  Also, many major pharmaceutical companies have made Ireland their headquarters for all of Europe.

The Guinness factory stands prominently in the Liberties section of Dublin.  Ireland’s other most famous export, the Jameson Distillery can be found on the famous Bow Street.  It is an amazing concept to imagine that these two establishments produce every bottle in every bar and pub around the world. If ever visiting, I highly recommend a visit just to view the process of how these products are made.

The Killarney and Limerick sections are storybook panoramas.  The Blarney Castle and Bunratty Castle are scenic with panoramic views. The Blarney Castle housing the famous Blarney Stone. There is only one way up and if you make the trek, you are rewarded with an incredible view. Bunratty Castle in County Clare, is situated in a storybook village. Thatched roofs, houses painted in bright colors, and quaint shops dot along the road. The landscapes feature plentiful sheep and cows grazing.  Part of those landscapes include world class golf resorts.  Oftentimes, you may only see golfers in windbreakers and shorts carrying golf clubs in any weather.  Ireland is one of the world’s top producers of natural sheep wool. We were lucky enough to view a sheering however production has declined in recent years due to synthetic material elsewhere.

Naturally, Philadelphia is home to many immigrants of all races and creeds.  What connections and influences do Ireland and Philadelphia share?  We learned of a prominent Philadelphia builder by the name of John McShain, Jr.  McShain, whose father had emigrated from County Derry, was a carpenter by trade.  John Jr. during the 1930’s was able to procure federal building contracts.  Projects such as the Roosevelt Library, Jefferson Memorial, Pentagon, and rebuilding of the White House set an impressive record for the McShain family and earned him respect and admiration from many dignitaries.  In later years, the McShain’s traveled to Killarney, Ireland and were enamored with the peaceful atmosphere.  They decided to make their home permanent in Killarney and today is known as the Killarney House.  Their estate is part of Killarney National Park.  If you happen to visit County Kerry and Killarney Park, you can enjoy the beauty of the land or visit Hagley Museum in Wilmington, Delaware to learn about the contributions of their business in the United States.

Here in Philadelphia, we can appreciate the Irish Memorial in Penn’s Landing which pays homage to the millions of immigrants in search of freedom and prosperity.  If you’re looking for authentic Irish imports, there are a few stores that offer fine apparel, wool, and crafts.  The Philly Irish Shop, Tulleycross Fine Irish Handcrafts, and a Touch of Ireland are all in the Philadelphia region.  As for other famous imports, the many pubs in Greater Philadelphia continue to serve the finest liquors and hold the strong traditions of their ancestors.  Pubs have been and continue to be the centerpiece of our greatest celebrations in Philadelphia history.

AFTER HOURS AT DiBRUNO BROS. Eat, Drink, and Make Memories

by TheSpot August 30, 2023
written by TheSpot
DiBruno Bros. After Hours

Stepping in the original location of Di Bruno Bros. is like walking into a black and white photo of Old World Philadelphia.  It is a nod to an early twentieth century scene of butchers, fishermen, and cheese mongers weaving through 9th Street with wheelbarrows of their latest catches or kills.  After 80 years of business, the DiBruno Bros. brand has evolved from a specialty store to a Philadelphia culinary enterprise.  The brand is now in major supermarket chains, several store locations, plus events and catering.  We recently met with Tommy Amorim, Assistant Store Team Leader and After Hours Director, to learn more about its history and in some ways a true Philadelphia story.

After Hours is an in store customer experience like no other.  First however, we learn Tommy’s role starting with the original store.  Tommy’s grandfather, Giuseppe Abruzzo, worked for Di Bruno Bros. for 62 years alongside owners Danny and Joe.  DiBruno Bros. was more or less a cheese store along other specialty stores on 9th Street.  After Tommy’s grandfather’s passing in 2008, Tommy decided that he wished to step into the work of his grandfather.  We asked the question if cheese mongering is a lost art form.   Tommy acknowledges that there are less and less cheese professionals due to pre-packaged cheeses however abides by traditional cheese making methods.  Today, Tommy is part of the 2nd generation of the Di Bruno Bros. family.

So what exactly is After Hours?  DiBruno Bros.has various locations in the Philly region.  After Hours offers a group of 10 or more people a two hour shopping experience of curated cheeses, charcuterie plates, and wine pairings.  Cheesemongers use their creativity and inspiration to come up with 6 to 7 plates.  Tommy trusts his team to apply their passions and imagination in creating these special platters and pairings.

We asked Tommy what he hopes are the takeaways after this experience.  He hopes that those who participate not only leave enriched nutritionally, but also mentally and spiritually.  If a client has any dietary restrictions, their mongers curate boards to fit customers’ needs.

For Tommy, this is not just a trendy new foodie job but a purpose of sharing and experiencing the best cheeses of the world and passing it on to customers. It is easy to see Tommy is passionate about  taking these time honored traditions and revitalizing them.  The result is a fully immersive experience of tradition, history, and the palate.

How did After Hours come about?  Surprisingly the idea stemmed from a little humor stemming from customer comments wishing they could stay locked up in the store after closing.  The illuminating brain child of Tommy of pairing cheese with wine gave life to the After Hours Program.  In addition to these specialized pairings, the feature includes a 20% discount off all items, plus a store gift either in the form of a tote bag or something comparable.   During the shopping experience, Tommy encourages guests to indicate to a store professional whatever meets the eye.  They will then cut the items for you or  make them available for purchase.

It is no secret that Philadelphia has one of the best culinary scenes in the country.  As we become sophisticated in taste, experience, and skills, curiosity does not slow down.  We want to know more about where our food is sourced, we want to discern taste, age, notes and so forth.  Di Bruno Bros. found a way to meet that curiosity.

So who can participate in After Hours?  Pretty much anyone for any type of celebration.   Whether it is a special occasion or simply a celebration of food and drink, mongers treat each instinct with care. As for returning guests, their mongers make sure they don’t repeat the same presentation.  What is the process of curating a group?   According to Tommy, the professionals base their presentation on current selections of cheese and pairings that invigorate the staff and spark their creative outlets. If you’re curious about entering this line of work, well Tommy is all too happy to set you on the right path on how to get started.

So if you’re looking for a memorable occasion, After Hours DiBruno Bros. is an encompassing culinary adventure that takes you on a trip of the best international goodies.  The enthusiasm, history, and inspiration make it a true Philadelphia story.

Look for Part 2 of our feature in the coming weeks of our Di Bruno Bros. Wayne location adventure as they continue to provide a one of a kind experience!

5 Surprising Culinary Uses for Lavender to Make Your Summer Pop!

by TheSpot July 5, 2023
written by TheSpot

After our visit to Field & Flock Lavender Farm, we were inspired to create recipes to embrace the season. Lavender farms are in bloom and we came up with five surprising easy uses for lavender to get your summer in gear at the beach, on the deck, or in your sunroom. Here’s a little fun fact. The word July derives from Julius Caesar. Hence the month of July represents an imperial figure of antiquity and purple symbolizing nobility and power. Don’t forget that here in the United States 4th of July is celebrated with the red and blue and combined you guessed it… makes purple! So while this misty flower is experiencing it’s peak bloom, why not make your summer pop with lavender in culinary recipes?

The fragrant smell of lavender serves as an instant de-stresser. That’s why it’s no surprise that people are re-discovering the benefits of lavender in tea, honey, and baked goods. Imagine waking up in your happy place relaxed and rejuvenated? Here are a few ideas on how to incorporate lavender in some of your dishes. Lavender is delicate and aromatic therefore makes a great companion to meats, fishes, and desserts. We recommend using the buds of the flower and preferably dry while adding to certain foods. You may very well find them at a fancy hotel, restaurant, or your favorite cocktail lounge but most likely accompanied with a steep price tag. Can you make your own and add a little fun while doing so? Absolutely! The good news you won’t have to travel far and wide for exotic ingredients. Mid-summer is the time for beach picnics, backyard barbecues, or she shed moments for yourself. Sit back, taste the sunshine, and indulge in your favorite treat!

  1. Lavender Sugar -This is rather easy. Simply add dried lavender buds to sugar and keep in a small mason jar to set aside for baking. Make your favorite cookies, cupcakes, or basically any type of dessert that is lavender inspired. A teaspoon in your coffee adds hints of floral notes.
  2. Lavender Tea -Add dried lavender buds in a diffuser while boiling tea. Once tea is hot, add the diffuser in your favorite tea for an added bonus of unwinding and calmness
  3. Lavender Ice Cream – You can actually make your own lavender infused ice cream. All that is needed is a bit of milk, heavy cream, add in some dried buds and oila!
  4. Lavender in the Oven – I started using lavender as a seasoning several years ago and it upped my cooking game for my family. Because this flower is so aromatic, less is definitely more. Roasted chicken, lamb, and fish with this fine seasoning is a game changer!
  5. Lavender Inspired Beverages -The possibilities are endless. Lavender ice tea, lavender lemonade, or lavender mojitos if you want to kick it up bring friends and summer together like bees to lavender honey. See what I did there?

Is West Chester, PA the Best Small Town in America?

Is West Chester, PA the best small town in America?  There are several charming towns in the surrounding Philadelphia region however there is one that offers a combination of charm, history, and a quaint small town vibe.  West Chester is situated in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  Home to West Chester University and the American Helicopter Museum, West Chester offers plenty of boutiques and bars.  Downtown West Chester is so recognizable among city chic and town locals that it came as no surprise when West Chester was voted as one of the winners of the Great American Main Street Awards hosted by the National Main Street Center in 2017.

We recently visited Gay Street Open Air Market in downtown West Chester.  During the weekends, Gay Street is closed to traffic to give locals and visitors the chance to stroll the walkway.  Bars, restaurants, and boutiques are burgeoning with diners, passer byes, and shoppers beginning on Friday mornings to Monday mornings.

Iron Hill Brewery West Chester was the first large restaurant on the corner of Gay and Market Street that we came upon.  We chose it as our lunchtime afternoon pub with none other than fish and chips and a refreshing Iron Hill beer.  Live music drifted down as patrons dined or sat in park benches to drink in the light and music.

We spent the afternoon window shopping down the four blocks. Down town is home to over 65 boutiques and each is more unique than before.  The diversity of shopping on Gay Street included everything from vintage clothes, record stores, chic wear, and collectibles.  It’s easy to spend a weekend day wandering, having a languid lunch, or simply drink in the sunshine.  There is more than meets the eye however.

The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center has been home to vintage and modern aircraft and hydro gliders since 1996.  The museum is truly unique in that it highlights the contribution of this particular aircraft as well as provides education for STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) programs.  If you are an aviation enthusiast or simply curious, do not miss the wonders of the museum and history it holds.

Another unique feature found in West Chester is the Stroud Preserve.  A 571 acre patchwork of lands, the Preserve offers a one of a kind combination of education, recreation, and scientific research.  Habitats, watersheds, and wildlife can all be observed and enjoyed.

There is little doubt that West Chester, PA really is one of the best small towns in America.  Make it a destination to uncover lesser known resources and you’ll be making return plans in no time.
