The Art of Botantical Beauty: Meet Alexa Fornicola of Botanically Blurred

by TheSpot April 8, 2024
written by TheSpot

Caring for plants or planting gardens can be a daunting experience for busy women. Admittedly, when we first discovered Alexa Fornicola, Founder of Botanically Blurred, it was the first time we encountered a “plant stylist.”  As a matter of fact, when we had Googled the term, there was no one we found other than Alexa.  We’re actually glad.  Alexa is a unique individual who has managed to create a unique place in the world.  I don’t believe there is one definition that encompasses a role, livelihood, and purpose.  Yet, Alexa has managed to combine all of those traits and found a way to help people.  In many ways, her company name fits in very well with our theme that life does not have to be shades of black and white.  Women in particular are blurring the lines of self identity and awareness.  It was refreshing to hear Alexa tell her story about forming her own identity in her life’s work and purpose.  She dives in on her inspiration and the art of botanical beauty.

Alexa is coming into her second year of Botanically Blurred and has gained more confidence than the previous year.  As we discussed imposter syndrome, Alexa brings up an interesting point.  She has made it a point not to define herself by the things she is doing but how she feels on a day to day basis.  She goes on to explain that the term successful has a different meaning to everyone.  She defines success by what she accomplishes on a daily basis. Fornicola does acknowledge that there are challenges for women in creating an identity or fitting into a space.

Alexa’s segway to plant curating and maintenance, was not a traditional route.  As a matter of fact, considering her previous career and her current career choice could be deemed a tale of clashing worlds.  At 21 years of age, she was hired for sales at a beer distributorship.  To say she had to overcome challenges in a male dominated industry is an understatement.  Alexa describes her time in sales as demanding and stressful.  Moveover, she spent a large amount of time on the road and often found herself in a challenging male dominated environment.  Although her work life was spent in her car and traveling, she often was surrounded by plants when she returned home.  Mainly acquiring  low maintenance plants or succulents, Alexa tells us that the extent of her knowledge of caring for plants consisted of being easy to take care of and not much else.  Consequently, her plants never would survive.

During covid-19, her company had shut down and Alexa’s employers redefined her position. After a certain point, the stress began to affect her physical and mental health.  She began to feel her work was not adding meaningful value to anyone’s life.  All of this led to Alexa drawing the conclusion that reaching an hierarchy in a company or the corporate world no longer drove her.  It no longer aligned with her sense of value or purpose. All the while, Alexa was coming home and tending to her plants.  Alexa’s curiosity led her to read and learn more about plant care. It was during this period where she experienced a shift in her outlook.

Alexa believes herself to be spiritual and sought alignment with her passion. She faced a difficult decision which took her well over a year to make but nevertheless decided to leave her job.   Shortly after, she began working at a plant nursery.  It was during this time, Alexa experienced a renewed feeling of  joy and invigoration.  She knew in her heart that she absolutely made the right decision.  Fornicola goes on to say that her goal is to make others feel the same sense of joy.   As for herself, the plants in her own apartment became plentiful. Her own best friend made an inadvertent compliment by telling her a plant in her apartment looked fake to her amusement. Alexa acknowledges that she is aesthetic centric and was looking for ways to add more plants while caring for her current ones. It became a natural step to take on more clients and eventually move her plants to a bigger space.

Alexa choosing the right plants

We were curious and asked the question if humans do in fact have an emotional connection to plants and nature; similar to a pet or member of the family.  Alexa emphatically affirms this notion.  She explains the scientific term, called biophilia, is defined by a desire to connect with nature.   We experience this “love” for example when walking on grass barefoot, touching a plant, smelling flowers etc.  Surprisingly, there is an actual device called The Plantwave Device that attaches to the plant and provides biofeedback into sonic data.  In essence, the plants emit electronic signals that translate into sound.  A remarkable discovery that demonstrates there’s more than meets the eye.  She goes further to explain that studies show that microbial networks are complex interconnected relationships that assist each other in ecosystems and plant health.  Alexa also admits that she has a constant need for progress.  She is constantly amazed at how nature finds a way to push forward through cracks or leaves rooting itself.  Alexa’s motto is if you keep going I’ll keep going.

Botanically Blurred now works with clients in interior plant design and maintenance. Alexa’s job is to choose the right plants to fit her clients personality and lifestyle. Additionally, she developed a mental fortitude towards her business.  Her goal is to not to compromise aesthetics but rather find solutions to have it all.  Her style is wanting her clients to “miss” the plants when they’re not there. So, what exactly is the process of how Alexa works with a client?  She assesses her clients’ needs, lifestyle, and their space.  For example, If a plant requires higher level care, Alexa will ask a lot of questions to determine what works.  Does the client have pets?  She will make sure the plants she chooses are non toxic.  Alexa allows the client to determine how involved they want to be.  They will either turn over the decision entirely over to Alexa or the client is welcome to add as much input as they would like.  Understanding the client is key.  Alexa even gets down to the granular level by asking questions relating to thermostat settings (which helps her assess how much watering a plant will need).

Plant interior design

Her advice in looking for inspiration or getting started in designing your space with plants?  One way is to walk around a home and garden outlet, choose a plant that speaks to you, find out the name and research all the details.  Her tip:  start small.  Do not overcomplicate.  Fornicola feels it’s important to self reflect about how involved you want to be in the actual care and go from there.  Of course, you can always have a professional outlet like Botanically Blurred who will guide you in the right direction to a better living environment.  Botanically Blurred  services New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  For information on her services or to book an appointment, learn more here https://www.botanicallyblurred.com/

UNVEILING THE BLUE MEANIE:  BRIAN HEFFRON’S INCREDIBLE RISE FROM SOUTH PHILLY TO THE WORLD OF THE WWE

by TheSpot April 3, 2024
written by TheSpot

You just may see Brian Heffron, a.k.a The Blue Meanie, at his local favorite bar McCusker’s Tavern.  Brian and his girlfriend Tracy are often together either taking in a game or chatting with other patrons.  Unimposing, Brian is soft spoken and pleasant.  McCusker’s, located in the St. Monica Parish section of South Philly, has been a long time favorite spot in the neighborhood.  It is the type of place that exudes comfort and home.  It’s only natural that Brian does not veer from his favorite place.  In many ways, his rise all started in St. Monica Parish and South Philly, where he was born.

Although he was born in Philly, at the age of two, Heffron’s family wound up moving to New Jersey.  Brian spent his childhood primarily in Gloucester City and Atlantic City.  He states today that even at a young age he felt a connection to South Philly knowing that’s where he was born.

Most artists that have a love of music, team, or movie and can name the exact moment of their calling.  That moment came in the form of Brian’s eight year old self when his friend next door wanted to watch wrestling instead of the Phillies.  Brian tells us he was enthralled especially by the larger than life aspect.  However, there was one match that Heffron attributes to getting “bitten by the bug.” That match was between Rick Martel and Tony Garea against Mr. Fuji and Mr. Saito.  He credits that match as the one that really stayed with him.

If Brian was entertaining any thoughts of one day becoming a wrestler himself, he had some serious health challenges to overcome.  Heffron had severe asthma growing up and often was in the hospital during spring and fall seasons. Brian recounts that he was hooked up to breathing machines for a couple of weeks at a time therefore consigned his love of wrestling as a spectator.  In hindsight, it is easy to see now how his journey led to wrestling.  As he explained, he often felt he didn’t quite fit in.  He was not able to participate in everyday outside activities therefore spent a large amount of time in his room.

During the early 1980s, his grandfather took him to wrestling matches at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.  The Boardwalk Hall was a popular venue for wrestling and especially the main events.  Brian vividly recalls the first match he attended.  The match consisted of  Mr. Fuji and Mr. Saito, Black Jack Mulligan against the Strongbow brothers and Andre the Giant.  Brian brings up the memory with a smile on his face but on a more personal note, the main event holds a special place in his heart as he notes it was a pivotal moment in his life.  Andre the Giant came to be his all time favorite wrestler.  Brian acknowledges that he really identified with Andre the Giant in terms of feeling different from the other kids.  Also, Heffron was often picked on for being asthmatic, living in a single parent household, and gaining weight as a child.

Depression also played a role due to his ongoing health issues.  Eventually Heffron was fortunate that his parents found a specialist who was able to properly diagnose Brian’s asthma.  Finding his asthma was triggered due to multiple allergies, they were able to find a treatment that has helped Heffron tremendously.  Eventually, Brian’s lungs became stronger and was able to participate in activities that he wasn’t able to in his high school years.  As a result, Brian tells us he was able to experience a new lease on life.

Heffron’s pro wrestling career began in Lima, Ohio shortly after high school.  About a year or so on the circuit,  Stevie Richards and Raven of ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) began to take note of the young Heffron.  As he recalls the story, Raven took Brian to his house in Cherry Hill, NJ  and presented the idea of taking on the character The Blue Meanie based on the Blue Meanies in the movie Yellow Submarine.  At that point in time, Brian was only concerned with joining the ECW.  Raven convinced Brian to dye his hair blue and his alter ego was born.  It was a full circle moment, as Brian tells us he often attended ECW shows as a fan.  Brian credits the ECW on what he describes as the Haley’s Comet of wrestling.  The ECW brought a toughness to the sport which he describes as wrestling’s “Broad Street Bullies.”   His outlook is that the ECW changed professional wrestling forever.  Brian names Todd Gordon as being the one responsible for many careers of pro wrestlers we are familiar with today.

After three years with ECW, it was a phone call in 1998 that would really change Brian’s career and the trajectory of his life.   Brian recalled that  had worked with Norm Connors in Pittsburgh.  After that show,  Brian returned to Philly and was told to expect a call from Bruce Prichard, Executive Director of WWE.  After speaking to Prichard, Brian who was then living with his grandmother and mother on 13th and Shunk Streets, advised his family to put all the bills under Brian’s name.  Needless to say, that was the moment he knew he had hit it big.  With a touch of emotion, Brian recalls that he was able to provide a comfortable life for his grandmother for the next couple of years of her life.  He expressed gratitude that he was able to give back to his family for all of the sacrifices they had made for him.   The feeling was a huge moment for himself, his family, and his hometown.

We wanted to know directly from The Blue Meanie, what is the significance of Wrestlemania 40 in Philadelphia?  What is the enormity of this event?  Brian does not give a watered down explanation.  He simply states that it’s long overdue.  Brian cites the early days of how Philadelphia was a huge market for wrestling and that matches were televised in the city.  He emphasizes that Philly was always a pro wrestling town. As a matter of fact, Vince McMahon would come to the Spectrum to get a first hand look of the product. To paint a picture, Brian describes Wrestlemania as the Super Bowl of wrestling.   After all, this is the ultimate goal of any professional wrestler .  Any city that hosts Wrestlemania benefits economically as well as other promotions and companies.  The Hall of Fame, Friday Night Smackdown, and Monday Night Raw will be huge draws.  People are hailing from all over the world to attend all of these events.  In addition, Wrestlemania is huge culturally for the city so it only makes sense that Wrestlemania returns “home.”  Heffron himself will be hosting his own Wrestlemania event, Meanie Mania.  If you’re expecting some large venue in downtown Philly, think again.  Heffron will be in his favorite place, McCusker’s Tavern.

Naturally we wanted to know the importance of female wrestlers and interest in the sport overall.  Brian affirms that this is the best time for women in wrestling.  His take is that it was always perceived to be a male dominated profession however the last decade is changing that perception. All female events, pay per views, and big names are drawing in big numbers .  Brian recognizes that female wrestlers have always been great for the sport and entertaining.  He goes as far as saying, the growth of females in the WWE is nothing less than a revolution.  Heffron names women like Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair as big time draws and Rhea Ripley is one of the biggest names regardless of gender.

With Meanie’s rise from humble beginnings to the WWE, how does the  future look for The Blue Meanie?  He continues to give back and wishes to entertain further with his podcast Mind of the Meanie and lately appearing in various documentaries.  His goal is to bring smiles and laughter to his audience and fans of the sport.  According to The Blue Meanie, as long as that’s the case, he’s done his job. You can find the Mind of the Meanie podcast where ever you get your podcasts.

PETAL POWER: THE PHILADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW

by TheSpot March 6, 2024
written by TheSpot

If we are to close our eyes for a moment and think a good thought, to de-stress, or to visualize, chances are we think of a place of unparalleled beauty.  We then may think of our loved ones or a special person of whom we would like to share that beauty.  What would that beautiful place look like?  Maybe it’s a field, lake, or even an ocean surrounded by flowers. A dreamlike oasis where art meets the natural world.  The Philadelphia Flower Show can is one of the most anticipated events of the year where art meets nature.  Held annually in Philadelphia, it is considered the world’s oldest indoor flower show, drawing over 250,000 visitors.  The economic and social impact to the region is boundless.

Seth Pearsoll has gardening and landscaping in his blood.  Growing up in the midwest, Pearsoll was always working the land as a hobby and a chore. Curiously, he was studying linguistics and getting ready for finals when an article on landscape design caught his eye.  After making some decisions, Pearsoll headed to Massachusetts to pursue his degree at The Conway School of Landscape Design.  After some years, Seth found himself in Philadelphia and now has the enviable role of Creative Director and Vice President of the Philadelphia Flower Show.

The Flower Show has been growing exponentially with each passing year.  Forbes calls it “a truly beloved event that has been a staple in the cultural fabric of Philadelphia for 195 years.”  Each year, a theme is selected by a multitude of factors.  We were curious on how a theme is decided upon.  Seth brought up the interesting concept of a before and after covid.  Prior to covid, themes were based on escapism which Seth stresses the positive aspects. After covid, the conversation shifted generating ideas and partnerships with substance.  Partners and spectators were in search of  themes that are timely, applicable, and relevant.  He emphasizes the importance of maintaining a light touch and engagement.  Pearsoll illustrates that during covid, themes centered around mental health and wellness.  Following the two years during the covid, they decided upon a bold and passionate theme: Garden Electric in 2023.  The concept originated from the notion that flowers in their essence ignite sparks within the soul.

Pearsoll explained that this year’s theme, United by Flowers, emanated from a sense of hunger for common ground and shared passions for gardening.  The idea was to build a show around sharing and intersecting passions.  We asked if there’s an ever-growing interest in learning more about nature & gardening in general, and Seth’s answer is ‘yes’. He has two sides to the story. ‘There’s always been an interest in gardening & landscaping in the older generations, but younger generations are moving towards learning & education for themselves rather than out of necessity’ he says. Seth is of the opinion that there is a new generation that is embracing and personalizing gardening and landscaping.

So how does the Philadelphia Flower Show continue to inspire and what can we expect this year?  Community is apparent throughout the exhibition. From the dining rooms to the beauty salons and a huge map of the United States, there is something for everyone. On Artisan Row, visitors can create their own unique and personal floral crowns, construct their own bouquets, and design their own floral handbags. Early Morning Tours are available for purchase for a special tour and a deeper dive into horticulture..  Butterfly Live is a unique experience to see first hand beautiful butterflies resting and gently engaging with visitors in a netted tent.

The Philadelphia Flower Show has been captivating audiences for almost 200 years.  This one of a kind experience is where we can connect with the outside world, learn more about species and plant life, and ultimately inspire us to create and recognize our own natural habitats and place in the world.  It is our opportunity to learn and appreciate a truly unique event. CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN PHILADELPHIA: A CITY OF FIRSTS

by TheSpot February 25, 2024
written by TheSpot

Philadelphia is a city of firsts.  The first hospital, the first lending library, the first African Methodist Episcopal Church, the first art museum, the first women’s medical college and if you can believe it, much more.  As we celebrate Black History Month, we journey into discovery, history, and impact of many of our celebrated figures.  As we continue learning  stories through art, writings, and music, we discover the lasting impact of diverse cultures throughout our city and beyond.

Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E) Church is one of the more significant and noted congregations in the country.  The existence of the church leads to its founder, Richard Allen.  Allen was formerly enslaved by a Philadelphia attorney, and eventually sold to a farmer in Delaware.  Richard was influenced by traveling Methodists to preach the word and at the age of 20, bought his freedom.  For several years, Allen supported himself with labor jobs.  After purchasing a parcel of land on 6th and Lombard Streets, the ground was dedicated on July 29th, 1794.  It is the oldest African Methodist Episcopal congregation in the nation. The church’s archives are a treasure trove of historical documents, books, and visitor logs. Mother Bethel A.M.E Church still stands and remains active today.  Richard and his wife Sarah are buried on site.

MARIAN ANDERSON

Marian Anderson, born in Philadelphia in 1897, rose to the greatest heights in the opera world because of her gifted voice.  In 1925, she entered a contest along with 300 other contestants.  She won first prize and performed with the New York City Philharmonic Orchestra. She went on to highly successful tours throughout Europe during the 1930s.  She performed in front of world leaders, kings, queens, and diplomats.  Despite her great success, some doors were closed to Marian due to her race.  In one instance, she attempted to rent a concert facility in Washington, D.C however was denied.  Drawing widespread protest including Eleanor Roosevelt, Marian ultimately performed at Lincoln Memorial in January 1955.  She drew over 75,000 people and was given a standing ovation.  In the coming years, Ms. Anderson was a recipient of numerous awards, medals, and honorary degrees.  A few include the Presidential of Freedom and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards.  Today, the home purchased by Marian in 1924 at 762 South Martin Street, was deemed a historical landmark.  The home operates as The Marian Anderson Residence Museum.

The Sound of Philadelphia was not only a musical era but a movement.  Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, have solidified their place in music history as songwriters and producers.  Furthermore, their black owned label, Philadelphia International Records spurned hit after hit throughout the 1970s and beyond.  Artists such as the O’Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, and Patti LaBelle reverberated from Broad Street to around the world.  Songs like “Message in our Music” and “Wake Up Everybody” embodied musical expressions of community and activism with danceable beats.  In addition to a thriving music scene, Gamble and Huff thrived as successful businessmen not only owning the label, but owning the publishing rights and masters.

Today, TSOP or Philly Soul, has influenced recording acts around the world.  Current performers such as Justin Timberlake and Boyz II Men have directly cited the Philly Sound as being a major influence to their music.  The actual recording studio no longer exists however all one has to do is walk along the Philadelphia Music Alliance Walk of Fame along Broad and Walnut Streets to view our treasured artists and their impact.

Lawnside, NJ has the denomination of becoming the first independent self-governing African American municipality in the northern U.S.  Peter Mott was a minister and self made man who offered their home as a stop for the Underground Railroad. As a prosperous property owner, his land oftentimes provided a safe haven to enslaved escapees.  Today, his home stands as a museum.  Historical documents show the importance of the site and town as many in the community worked together as freedom fighters or to do their part in assisting those to freedom.

To really experience the rich tapestry of our culture here in the Greater Philadelphia region, visiting and walking tours really put us in the space of time of our African American brothers and sisters. It is the buildings, art, and music that tell stories that we are not always able to see or hear at face value.  We continue to journey to discovery with rich and authentic narratives.

The Delightful Experience of Afternoon Tea: A Perfect Blend of Elegance and Indulgence

by TheSpot February 13, 2024
written by TheSpot

Love is an expression that manifests in a variety of ways.  There is romantic, familial, for friends or for any living being in our lives. There is self-care or self-love.  Whether we are healing or simply nurturing ourselves, loving ourselves is showing up for our best selves.

As Valentine’s Day and the equally popular Galentine’s Day are upon us, however way we choose to celebrate love, is really a matter of personal choice.  Cookie cutter ideas are becoming a thing of the past and we’re here for it.   Chocolate remains the ultimate symbol of the love month and we wouldn’t have it any other way.  As restaurants offer specialized menus and limited promotions, we found there are other delightful experiences that you can enjoy with your favorite people.

Firstly, how often when making plans for a group, does the idea of a convenient bar serving up cocktails and perhaps a few bites springs to mind?  While coordinating schedules, the feeling becomes more or less like a job and the end result is something thrown together which takes the fun out.  There is always a time for a meet up but maybe there are some easier ideas that can give you back quality time.

Tea rooms or cafes devoted to tea time have gained popularity recently.   Perhaps a return to old-world traditions and elegance has bookings in high demand.  Either way, the ambience of a place setting, linens, tea cups, and finger sandwiches exudes an air of refinement.  A tea house allows these moments of leisure by sipping on a cup of tea, savor small delicacies, and engage in the art of conversation.  It allows us to fully immerse ourselves in the present moment and cherish it.

Why have a tea party gathering?  In addition to valuing precious time, it allows your loved ones to sample diverse tastes and traditions from around the world.   A Tase of Britain in Wayne, Pa, offers not only teas from across the pond, but also hard to find snacks and candy bars that can only be found in the U.K.  If you don’t want the experience to end there, an adorable gift shop offers many unique items that make great gifts or simply to take home a few mementos.  La Mademoiselle Macaron in Mullica Hill, NJ, offers a French experience with tea, fresh macarons, tarts, and pastries.  Select events and workshops are also available on their website.  For an elevated afternoon tea experience, The Mary Cassatt Tea Room in The Rittenhouse, is an old-world affair.  A Philadelphia tradition that will take you on a journey back in time.

Schedules, appointments, sports activities won’t let up anytime soon.  We can however set aside an afternoon to relish in a world where time slows down, enjoy our company, and appreciate the exquisiteness of life.

Taking a Chance on Hudson Chance

by TheSpot February 9, 2024
written by TheSpot

Why take a chance on young actor Hudson Chance?  For one, we firmly believe that this twelve-year old possesses immense potential for a promising future.  In the upcoming series, “Joey’s Place,” set in South Philadelphia, the protagonist, Joey, grapples with lasting impact of childhood trauma.  Chance will portray Joey’s younger inner self, while Frank Volpe takes on the role of adult Joey.  This unique dynamic will undoubtedly present some interesting scenarios as the adult Joey confronts his twelve-year old self.  We had the opportunity to speak to Hudson about his role and what viewers can look forward to.

We were curious about why Hudson took an interest to this role.  He cites that he and young Joey have a lot of similarities.  For Hudson, there is some fun in store by playing a character from the past.  And what does he think if young Joey gets into trouble?  Well, it seems Hudson would enjoy playing both sides.  Chance is particularly curious about what leads Joey to some bad behavior.  Given that he is the same age as his character, Chance would have the ability to give a bird’s eye view on the complexities of Joey’s inner dialogue.

Hudson’s love of acting sparked from when his mother signed him up for community theatre camp and he played one of the leads.  We asked if there any memorable parts that stood out. He tells us that he once played a lemon on stage. If anything, it generated a lot of laughs over his costume.  Considering Hudson’s journey so far, we’re sure it was the best lemon the audience had seen so far.

It is evident why Hudson is a perfect fit for this series.  He has some sizeable role models within his own family.  His grandfather, is incredibly active at the age of 74, serves as an inspiration recently as he recently scaled Mount Everest.  Hudson also looks up to his uncle, who has shown him that with hard work and determination, goals can be accomplished.  Hudson Chance is not only a talented actor but participates in various hobbies to keep himself occupied.  Among his pastimes are soccer, swimming, football, and playing video games.  One of the perks of portraying Joey is that Chance gets to indulge in one of his favorite hobbies- video games.

We begged the question, what would he enjoy about his time in Philadelphia?  Without hesitation, our famed cheesesteak.  He told us his favorite but we’ll leave the guessing up to you.  He reminds us that it is never too late to tap into our inner child to pursue our dreams.

New Beginnings.

by TheSpot January 1, 2024
written by TheSpot

As the year winds down, we reflect on what has been accomplished as well as anticipate what 2024 will bring.  Every year we seem to move faster, the holidays come up a little quicker, our shopping windows tighter.  This year, myself and a few others noticed less Christmas cards in the mail.  December seemed to have perennial traffic.  We replaced our cute family photo cards with a Facebook post generalizing a holiday wish to a friend list.  Stamps are getting more expensive.  And who even has time to go to the post office?  Yes, life is busy.

As we ponder these questions, let’s rewind just a bit.  2023 began timidly in a post pandemic world.  Although many events began to get back on track in 2022, there were setbacks and not all events/establishments were officially open.  By mid 2023, international travel surged, and in some cases, surpassed 2019 statistics.  All that aside, The Spot Magazine began with an intention of getting people back into their communities and re-discover all the treasures we have in our own backyard.  Now it seems, experience is everywhere.  Whether it be a spa, a farm, cocktail hours at hotel bars, or even film locations, there is so much to absorb.  In other words, experience life.  And that’s a great thing.  However it goes even further.

Each and every one of us has a purpose.  It is worth looking back on this past year.  The Spot was able to meet and visit everyday people doing extraordinary things.  They welcomed us into their place of business, their homes, and their lives.  It was a joy to share their stories.  Some were very personal and others wanted to share their work.  I am filled with gratitude that you have followed along our journey and hope that you continue to do so. As we venture into 2024, we’ll continue that journey.  We will continue sharing stories.  We will continue to highlight crafts.  We will continue to observe art.  We will bring all of this to you.  We are here to share your purpose.  At the end of the day, we are dreamers and storytellers.  I found my purpose.  Cheers to new beginnings!  May 2024 bring endless happiness, joy, and good health!

LOCAL PHILLY ACTOR DISHES ON SPORTS, FOOD, AND THE EXCITING NEW SERIES JOEY’S PLACE

by TheSpot December 13, 2023
written by TheSpot

Upon meeting local actor Frank Volpe, one immediately feels at ease.   This is due to the fact that he hails from Northeast Philadelphia and currently resides in Bucks County, PA.  During our conversation, a large Sixers poster loomed in the background solidifying his status as a Philly sports fan.   Within minutes, it became evident that Frank possessed the qualities of a friendly neighbor who takes the time to greet you and inquire about your well-being.  Frank is set to portray the lead character Joey in the highly anticipated television project, Joey’s Place.    Our discussion covered topics ranging from sports to favorite restaurants, all the while exploring why Joey’s Place is poised to become the next big sensation.

The tv series centers around a local bar/restaurant owner who dabbles in organized crime while grappling with his conscience in a tug of war between good and evil.  The voice of reason comes in the form of 12 year old actor, Hudson Chance, who plays Joey’s younger self.  “Pressure Cooker” is the pilot episode and full of dysfunctional high jinks.  Joey is smack dab in the middle of planning a heist at the restaurant when his wife makes an appearance with in-laws in tow.

The role of Joey is multi-faceted which offers an exciting opportunity for Frank to explore various characteristics.  Volpe’s skill sets include stunt work and martial arts, particularly Muay Thai.  We asked if he is able to apply those skills on set.   If a role calls for physical activity, Frank is all in.   So how did Frank connect with creators, Terry McFadden and Steve Sacavitch, and ultimately land the lead role?  According to Frank, he came across a casting call which immediately piqued his interest.  Being from Philly, Frank knew right from the start that he wanted to be a part of the series.   We asked him what made this role so appealing. and his response was that he’s looking forward to interacting with vibrant characters and filming in South Philly.  His impression is that Joey’s Place is in essence a love letter to the neighborhood.

What can audiences look forward to?  Volpe is eager to show Joey is a good guy at heart.  He acknowledges that Joey may not always make wise decisions but aspires to portray the layers of attributes to his character’s shadow self.   And what does Frank think of working with young actor Hudson Chance?  He tells us that working with kids can be fun and looks forward to learning a thing or two.

Frank is well on his way to building up his portfolio which leads us to the question of who are his biggest role models in pursuing acting full time?  If the words DeNiro and Pacino are on the tip of your tongue, you may want to think again.  Surprisingly, Frank cites his parents.  In his words, his mother was a strong advocate for doing “what makes you happy” as long as he was putting in the work and time.  It’s also easy to see the admiration for his father, who emigrated from Italy, and was able to start his own successful tile business.

Finally, as a Philadelphia native, we were curious about what makes Philly a magical place from his perspective.   Frank drew a parallel between the atmosphere of the city during the 2017-2018 Eagles season.  He noted the sense of camaraderie and connection among sports fans and general population especially during the Super Bowl.  There is an indescribable bond that exists which cannot be replicated elsewhere.  Furthermore, we inquired about Frank’s favorite spot to unwind.  He revealed that he indeed has two favorite Italian restaurants in the city.  Although he hesitates to disclose them fearing partiality, we can assure you that both establishments are authentic and thriving.    Additionally, you can find Frank rooting for …you guessed it…his favorite home town team, the Philadelphia Eagles.  Frank Volpe all in all, shares his love of acting all the while reveling in the colorful world of Joey’s Place and for that matter Philly. Unforgettable Fun Awaits: Experience Urban Air Adventure Park

by TheSpot December 8, 2023
written by TheSpot

Urban Air Adventure Park is not only an adventure but a playground utopia. A place of unforgettable fun that cannot only be imagined but experienced. Okay now that we got that out of the way, let’s answer the question: what is Urban Air Adventure Park? Well we may not have the complete definition but it’s as close to an indoor kids’ paradise as you can get. This franchise concept evolved fairly recently and after visiting the Sicklerville location, it is easy to see why it is poised for success.

Owners Rocco and Mahesh, were warm and welcoming. In existence for 3 years, this franchise is an impressive building consisting of a myriad of activities. As soon as we entered the premises, a birthday party was taking place. The establishment is bright, expansive, and multi-colored. I couldn’t help but notice that the grounds are strategically set up to meet the wonder and amazement of an adventure seeker. Imagination here is limitless. Platforms like Leap of Faith, Trapeze, and Wipeout are a few of the adventures in the park where kids propel their limitations. The Warrior Course is an obstacle course that tests your stamina and abilities. Can you hang on and catch the next hanging ring? It only remains to be seen. Just try climbing, crawling, jumping, and hanging without falling into the pit.

Virtual Reality is an immersive experience suitable for gamers or novices. The all ages experience allows you to fight off virtual dragons and robots in this alternate universe. If you’re looking for something a bit tamer, other games like Drop Zone are some options for some relaxed fun.

What is an adventure park without concession stands? They have that figured out too. An in house cafe serves all your favorite food delights. Kids’ preferences like pizza, chicken wings, and fries plus ICEE water ice can all be found at the cafe.  Memberships are available in several tiers that outline the best package for your family. The incentives and features included in annual memberships alone are worth the low monthly cost. Another sweet deal is that you can attend as many times as you wish throughout the month. Gift cards and tickets are also available for purchase. Urban Air Adventure Park is an impressive outlet that is educational, builds up confidence, and camaraderie. Ultimately, it is a place to create special memories. Don’t think of this as a kid party only destination. Mahesh explained that it is a popular choice for school events, team building, and camp. In addition, quite a few school fundraisers are held here.

What makes Urban Air Adventure Park unique and special? We live in a time of advancing technological inventions and it’s easy to spend hours with our electronic devices. Urban Air Adventure Park is a healthy and fun alternative to explore, exercise, and participate in group activities. It doesn’t have to be all about the kids. Entire families can reconnect in a way that brings out our inner 8 year old. I can say with just a slight bit of regret, that I only wish Urban Air Adventure Park existed for my 8 year old self.

Urban Air Adventure Park in Sicklerville is located in South Jersey and accessible in all major routes in the Greater Philadelphia region. For more information and questions about any of the activities mentioned in this article, visit http://urbanair.com.

Promising Young Star Show His Human Side in TV Series

by TheSpot November 27, 2023
written by TheSpot

In the second installment of our series, we have the pleasure of interviewing a vibrant and talented performer. Maro Dēlo possesses a remarkable level of wisdom that surpasses his age. As an actor, musician, and model, this young individual appears to possess an abundance of gifts. By simply observing his work on his social media platforms and admiring his youthful charm, one might assume that Maro is bound for stardom. However, upon meeting Maro, we encountered a self-assured yet compassionate young man who triumphed over his insecurities to forge a path that was not necessarily straightforward.

We were curious how Maro found himself in a strong creative field at such a young age. Juggling music, acting, and modeling can be daunting for the most seasoned professional. We asked if he experienced a lightbulb moment.  According to Maro, there were several moments.  Maro possessed a passion and natural ability for music.  A family member introduced him to music producers at a networking event just a few years ago, which sparked the idea to pursue music as a career.   At the age of 18, he decided that he would pursue this path professionally.

Acting and modeling came along but as Maro explains, he was not keen on the idea.  After teaming up with an acting coach who offered the right tools and support, Maro gradually embraced other opportunities.  In our conversation, Maro divulged that he was bullied as a child.  He took that humiliation and turned it into a positive by expressing power and control while on stage.

Maro portrays Jett, a bar back with dreams of becoming a musician, in Joey’s Place. To what extent does Maro resemble his character? Maro shares his personal encounters in the food service industry and his own journey in the music world. He draws a parallel to Matt LeBlanc’s portrayal of Joey in Friends, highlighting how LeBlanc, as a struggling actor, played a struggling actor in the show. However, Maro asserts that while he can put “parts of himself through the door” he ultimately follows the director and producers’ vision.

Childhood trauma is a concurring theme in Joey’s Place.  Jett, will have his own set of challenges with a father who belittles him.  Maro is eager to tap into his own emotions to bring dimension to Jett.  Maro is not afraid of demonstrating his emotions.  In fact, he wants to show that it’s okay for men to show their vulnerable side.  He believes that if we can continue changing perceptions about what is considered feminine and masculine emotions, we could help end bullying.

There is no doubt Maro Dēlo has a bright future ahead.  Opportunities for young talent to play multi-faceted characters not only enhances a story but gives audiences a chance to explore real life challenges in depth.  Philadelphia is rapidly becoming a creative hub in the world of entertainment.   We are a place of treasures that only continues to add to our rich tapestry of stories.  You can support production of the pilot  episode of Joey’s Place by clicking on the link.  https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/unveiling-the-world-of-joey-s-place#/
